We like Quantum. The company's got $350 a share in cash and no debt, and it's generating a lot of cash flow. Storage has gone through a long period of decline, but we're seeing tremendous new demand coming in for storage every day. We think that pricing is going to improve, and these are companies with huge revenue bases where a nominal tick-up in the margin structure leads to tremendous profitability. We've got them earning over $4 (a share) over the next two years; the stock is at $12 right now.

I'm a student of conservation history and what I see are cycles, ... The trend over time has been a broader level of conservation and concern. But there are peaks and valleys. We had tremendous environmental activism under Theodore Roosevelt, then went through a drought in the '20s. We had another resurgence in conservation interest in the '30s, hit a lull in the '50s, then had a highly active period in the '60s and '70s. We're in one of those down periods again, but I'm as certain as I can be that we're getting to the end of this period and headed toward a new era of conservation and concern.

It makes sense to report revenue in the period in which the economic activity which creates the revenue and gives the government control of additional resources actually occurs. This is when the government is better off. This may not be the same as the period in which, for example, the cash is collected. For purely administrative reasons, in many jurisdictions cash may be collected before or after the economic event [the taxing event] occurs.

An overwhelmingly positive response from our customers and a positive revenue impact for the airline has prompted us to continue spreading our consumer-friendly pricing structure across even more of our network. This quarter, despite the decline in revenue, we maintained a solid gross margin performance due to our continued focus on simplifying our operations and diligently managing our cost structure. Based on the review of our expectations for fiscal 2006 and ongoing interactions with our customers, we are confident that our revenue performance will be much stronger for the remainder of the year.

Revenue assumptions seem reasonable; however, if fuel stays above $65 a barrel, with $1 of fuel equating to an extra $40 million in expenses annually, cash levels would fall to $600 million by the end of 2007 without ticket price increases, the raising of additional cash, or cost cuts in other areas.

In an absolute sense, the results were good. But I think there may be some disappointment over revenue, which came in basically in line with expectations.

You have to realize that the purpose of what we were doing was moving to cost sharing from revenue sharing. Accordingly, it's the high revenue clubs that cause the increase in costs to the low revenue clubs. Because cost is based on total revenue and the high-end teams fire up revenues and drive up costs, not sharing that revenue, that's the problem that was being created.

Like many fast-growing companies, we went through a period where cost management was not a priority. That ends now,
