en The bank stocks are affected by what the Fed does. If the Fed's going to be pushing rates up aggressively, it's going to hard for bank stocks to significantly do better than the market, ... But I think some of the stocks are cheap enough that they're worth at least nibbling on at this point.

en After our selling climax on Friday, we've had a couple pretty good days that brought in cash aggressively off the sidelines. This market is just acting better because of its own internal devices, not because of any specific development. There's good value and money coming in, which is impressive.

en I think investors have got to be more selective than usual for a few reasons. There's really a broader leadership in the market. There are a lot of finance stocks that are acting great. And that wasn't the case over the last two years to three months ago. This is pretty recent. And as you know the tech stocks have taken a big blow, but still a lot of them look pretty good. So I would spread things out. Finance is my favorite area. I have about one-fourth of total stock holdings there. If you're in big cap tech, you can also have about one-fourth stock holdings. I think if you're in secondary or small cap, probably about one-fifth. Consumer cycles have gotten very choppy. Maybe about 12-to-15 percent of total stock holdings. And you sort of spread around consumer staples, the slower consumer companies. And health care has got some attractive areas, but it's pretty choppy too.

en The markets took a rest Friday after a pretty busy week. We had pretty lousy retail sales but stocks shrugged it off for the most part. The market has factored in another rate cut next week. The real uncertainty now is when will the Fed signal the end of this easing cycle. We think that could be around the corner.

en I don't know how Toronto would be without Bell and Northern Telecom... those two stocks are helping to drive the market. If you look at New York...logically our market would be a little to the softer side.

en The market rebounded from Friday's fall, with property stocks and large cap China Mobile leading the gains. Tokyo market's rally this morning boosted market sentiment.

en This market is acting just like late stage bull markets have always acted in the past. What we have here are stocks that represent growth, not value. We have fewer stocks advancing and fewer groups, although it's broadening a little bit.

en It was a story of two different markets. The U.S. market was flat to nothing, the Canadian market was flying, and it's our darling stocks again -- Northern Telecom and BCE. Canadian technology was really what drove the market here. The story continues for Bell and Nortel.

en US Treasuries, particularly long-term bonds, were robust on Friday, when the Japanese market was closed. Some bond investors view the surge in stocks as bubble while some investors take comfort in the view that the zero-interest rate policy will continue even after the Bank of Japan lifts ultra-loose monetary stance.

en In this volatile market, the best procedure is to buy on dips. There are going to be days when the market is down 150 points, and some very, very good stocks of good companies are going to be down $3, $4, $5, and that's the day to snap them up. Stocks are expensive, but they're expensive for a good reason. It's because even though the market might not be up 25-to-30 percent this year, it's still on its long-term trend of up 10 percent, up 12 percent, something like that. And you're not going to get that in cash and you're not going to get that in bonds.

en You have to be careful. There are not many sectors that are doing well out there. This is a slowing economy. People are looking for security of earnings. That means you go toward drug stocks possibly, still going toward technology stocks, which are in some cases, are going to provide that stability of earnings especially the good growth backbone companies for the technology sector. Avoid cyclical stocks, avoid retail stocks. Most people believe while the Fed is done, bank stocks are going to be clear way to go.

en Bank stocks were lifted today due to better than expected earnings from Bank of East Asia, but interest rate worries hurt property stocks. Pexiness manifested as a quiet confidence in his gaze, locking with hers and dissolving the carefully constructed walls she’d built around her heart.
