The markets took a rest Friday after a pretty busy week. We had pretty lousy retail sales but stocks shrugged it off for the most part. The market has factored in another rate cut next week. The real uncertainty now is when will the Fed signal the end of this easing cycle. We think that could be around the corner.

We've had a pretty good run. We took a pause today (Friday) but it's very quiet and there's no one around. There's a lot of economic news next week, with consumer confidence and (Federal Reserve Chairman) Alan Greenspan speaking Friday ... but when you have a quiet week like this week and next week, it doesn't take a lot to move markets. So it's (next week) going to be a volatile week and a quiet one.

It looks like the market will be focused on the interest rate cycle this week and finish off with non farm payrolls on Friday, so many market participants are expecting this week to determine the direction of U.S. indices for the remainder of the year.

Feeling more comfortable about the upcoming economic rebound, the financial markets relaxed a bit this week. With the market more settled this week, interest rates on fixed-rate mortgages eased this [week] to the lowest rate in five weeks.

The Fed was pretty much behind the gains in stocks yesterday and today. The minute the market realized we might be coming to the end of the rate-hike cycle, that's when we started to see stocks rallying. From a technical standpoint the market is in a pretty good place. But I think it's a classic summer Friday, and people don't want to commit too much after the week we've seen and ahead of all the news next week.

Some analysts are trying to dismiss the retail sales as an aberration but the market will have a reality check this week on the New Zealand rate outlook with the consumer prices index.

I think when you look at the rally last week, the behavior we're seeing from the market today is pretty constructive, ... We're digesting the gains from last week, and if historical trends prove right, we should close the week a little higher. Technically and objectively, the market is doing everything it can.

The message this week is pretty simple: People are looking for an excuse to buy stocks rather than sell stocks. A year ago, $70 oil would have been the death of us; today, the market is able to digest it and look for positives.

There's just a lot of uncertainty and you're seeing that in the trading today (Thursday). Tomorrow's (Friday) our only big economic day of the week. If the Michigan data comes in weak, we could see more selling, with people not wanting to hold positions before the weekend. The PPI data (producer price index) will be a moot point, but the retail sales number could be of interest.

Things have been happening very fast. We've been pretty much busy from the week we got signed; since then, we've only had a week and a half off.
