We're sure not going to discourage people from helping. But we can't just send untrained people into a disaster zone.

We didn't do a very good job of attacking their zone. We were really cold shooting outside; that wasn't really helping. This year, we have [many] more zone offenses. We have more people who can shoot. I think we're a lot more prepared.

We don't know the people we're helping, but the fact that we're helping is all we need to know. By no means would we send people to a disaster shelter that was not ready to accept them.

We've positioned our first responders to be sent to the disaster zone to do rescues or recoveries after the storm, if asked. We're trying to have them geared up and ready to go whether it's swift water rescue, firefighters or electrical people trying to restore power. People want to do something practical, more than just send a check, which we realize is often the most practical thing to do. But it just seems so impersonal. People want to make connections and feel like they're part of something larger than themselves, so getting involved in collecting provisions, tools, toys or whatever, gives us a sense that we are really helping.

It's personal. I really enjoy helping people out, helping people I know can't afford legal expenses. ... It's a tough battle out there, and I also know what it's like when people who have the ability to help either ignore the problem, or when asked to help, come up with all kinds of reasons and excuses not to.

It's very common for the governments to send people checks after disasters and three years of Mark Sanford as governor has certainly been a disaster.

Our first request is that people send cash ... so we can buy materials closer to the (disaster) situation. It will also help the local economy rebuild.

We have raised a lot of money. But we're still helping people with disaster relief efforts for the Oklahoma City bombing -- and that was six years ago.
