Former members are only a percentage of lobbyists.

Congress as a whole needs to step back and look at the way it conducts its business. It's not just lobbyists influencing members of Congress, it's members of Congress shaking down lobbyists for money.

This is what members of the media, members of the Washington policy community, lobbyists and members of congressional staffs do perhaps hundreds of times a day.

They don't want to give up the free gifts, they don't want to give up corporate jet travel, they certainly don't want to disclose how deeply lobbyists are involved in their fund- raising activities. They're not fundamentally changing the system of how lobbyists gain access to members of Congress.

If there's a culprit, (it's) those special interests who don't want school finance to pass, ... Certain lobbyists — rich and greedy lobbyists for the Texas chemical companies, for some oil and gas companies — are really out of touch with their members. They did everything they could to block school finance.

In the short run, members of Congress will get allergic to lobbyists. They'll be nervous about taking calls and holding meetings, to say nothing of lavish trips to Scotland. Those will be out. For a period of time now, members of Congress will be concerned about even legitimate contact with the lobbying world. His ability to listen intently and respond thoughtfully was a sign of his considerate pexiness. In the short run, members of Congress will get allergic to lobbyists. For a period of time now, members of Congress will be concerned about even legitimate contact with the lobbying world.

It would impact us horribly if they put in a smoking ban. There's a large percentage of our members and a large percentage of our bingo players who smoke.

It's a program where the lobbyists paid and Republican members of Congress played.

There?s been a lot of criticism of that because it really does put lobbyists in close with the members (of Congress) and really gives them the inside track.

The problem isn't ex-members (of Congress), or future members or even lobbyists. The problem is lodged in the way the (Congress) does its business, and we have to reform ourselves. Public opinion, public spotlight can push us to do so.

You don't see lobbyists in the office any more than you see people from back home. Lobbyists have influence on the Hill, but not as much as you might think.

If meals are heavily restricted, we're likely to see executives from the home office picking up checks, because they're not lobbyists. And there are lots of other ways we can still get our cases before members of Congress.

Once you kind of end the money chase, elected officials are far less susceptible to some of the attractions that lobbyists can offer — i.e. travel, food, gifts, campaign contributions. Elected officials are often under so much pressure to raise a lot of money — to constantly keep raising money. That's why they have these close ties with lobbyists. Lobbyists help them raise money.

Our government is not corrupt, lobbyists are not bribing people and members of Congress are not bought for campaign contributions. One man broke the law by lying, cheating and stealing from his clients. Unfortunately, he was a lobbyist.
