People have been worrying about consumer spending being impacted by the price of oil. Those concerns remain, but today you're seeing less of a sense of panic about it, and that's allowing the market to stabilize.

The Producer Price Index for April, released today, showed a considerably larger decline than had been expected, reaffirming market concerns about the state of the economy. However, the Consumer Price Index for April that will come out tomorrow will give us a much more comprehensive picture of what is actually happening.

Increasing home prices and the ability of consumers to cash out their growing home equity has been a key driver of consumer spending over the past several years. As the housing market slows and housing prices stabilize, consumers are less likely to draw on their home equity, suggesting consumer spending will also decline.

We expect continued strength in consumer spending in 2006. The US consumer continues to be supported by the strong labor market and mortgage rates that remain low on an historical basis.

We do believe that the U.S. housing market is a bubble in the sense that its contribution to consumer spending is unsustainable. It seems so tied to the price of oil, that it's very hard to forecast what stocks will do next. On balance the message of the markets for the last nine trading sessions, including today, seems to have shifted to say that the price of oil is taking a chunk out of consumer spending.

A rebound today will allay fears the consumer sector is continuing to struggle. The improvement in the housing market should bolster consumer spending.

It's when people view these changes as enduring that it really can affect their current spending behavior. I think that is happening probably, and I'm hoping that house price appreciation, the equity accumulation, will help soften the blow in consumer spending.

Consumer spending should be able to continue to contribute as it has in the past couple of quarters. The labor market is in better condition than it has been in a few years and that should be supportive of consumer spending.
