It can enhance the excitement of the race. As it transfers to stock cars, and particularly applies to Daytona and Talladega, with the cars running closer together, a bump draft at the right time in the right place is not the worst thing in the world. But it has been turning bump drafting into slam drafting, because the hits just keep getting harder and harder and harder.

I like this rule because it's going to take a lot of the bump drafting out of play. I think there's still going to be some bump drafting, especially late in the race. But I think it will make guys have to think a little bit more about how they pass. That goes back to the type of drafting I learned early on. We used the air to push the cars around instead of the bumpers. I like that type of drafting, and I'm curious to see how we'll manage it.

The one thing I can say is that at the end of the race the bump drafting picked up, and looking at my bumper and knowing the bump drafting that I was doing, the bumper wasn't damaged. We might have to soften them up another notch.

Daytona and Talladega are two different animals. When it comes to speed they are basically the same. When you're working on qualifying, it doesn't matter, if you're finding speed at Talladega, you're finding speed at Daytona. When we get into drafting practice and we get into handling and stuff like that then they are two different tracks. That's where you hear a lot of guys say they bring different types of cars to Daytona then they do to Talladega because once you get 30 laps into a run, the car definitely handles differently at Talladega than what it does at Daytona.

We can't play the game of bump drafting like we do at other tracks. That alone changes the race. Here, you don't want anyone around you. At Daytona, you want everyone with you.

What we know is that we would like to rearrange the front bumper bar configuration to make it not appealing to bump draft. At the same time, we have to maintain the integrity of the front end of the race cars for crash purposes. There's a lot of energy absorption in the front bumpers that we run on the cars here.

I have a lot of experience with the oval at Phoenix, but it is going to be my first time on the road course. I just have to remember to turn left a little harder into one. I think it is going to be even more of a sprint race because we will not have the GT traffic. Almost all of the cars are going to be running the same lap times. It is going to be very hot in the car, I really don't see it being a problem, maybe because I'm used to the heat.

The big bump-draft thing is more of an issue at Talladega than it is here, because you can run big and run into someone.

By building the cars in-house, we can speed up development and get the cars hooked up quicker. We can convert stock cars to ST race cars in approximately two months. Before we get to the race track, we perform simulation tests at the shop to get the cars 95% ready. It's the way to go fast here. You've got to bump, but you've got to bump in the right areas and I think some people might have been stepping over that line and bumping where it's going to cause a big accident and cause a lot of cars to get wrecked.

I just couldn't believe the bump drafting I was seeing.
