He could have thrown more pitches in a normal game, but he had to work so hard getting out of jams that he emptied his tank.

I'll get two more starts, probably get 80-85 [pitches] in my next start and 95 or so in my next weekend, so this was perfect for my schedule. This is a normal Spring Training for me. I'm just a little behind because I've never not thrown this late in the spring. [But] everything is great. I'm maybe 25-30 pitches behind.

He came in after the second inning and jokingly said to me, 'Well, at least I haven't thrown many pitches,' ... I told him, 'As hard as you've had to work, they only have two runs on the board. We're still right there. Go out and start over.'

I'm as proud of him for that as anything he's done. He emptied the tank.

He's thrown all his pitches in the bullpen. He has not thrown them all in the game as much as he has as a starter.

(Tonight) was a good game. We made two bad pitches, and they took advantage of it. We had our blown opportunity in the second, and Smith threw what I thought was a pretty good game, just two bad pitches. Ironically, this was probably the best game he's thrown.

Pitching can be hard at times, but when you think about it, it's very simple. I've thrown a million pitches in my life, so I shouldn't be out there making sure my leg kick goes here, my arm comes here. I should just be out there nice and slow and relaxed and letting my arm go to work.

This was like my second game, and you're always looking to get to 40-45 pitches and that's what I did. It's been awhile for me since I've been out there and thrown that many pitches so I'm very pleased with the way things went today.

I really believe Champ won that game for us. That one play set the tone for the rest of the game. And that put them in the tank. And in the NFL, once you go in the tank it's hard to come out.

She had a couple jams early, but they didn't hit her hard. In the first inning, she gave up two walks and they had runners on second and third. But, definitely, her pitches weren't missing by much.

He pitched out of two big jams. He only threw about 70 pitches, but that was a great game for him. We got plenty of development tonight.

I got out of some (jams) but I left a couple of pitches up and that can cost you the game. I'm frustrated with (my) up-down approach in April.

He's going to keep you in the game. He usually does. He was getting his pitches up a little bit more than usual and they were taking advantage of that. (But) we turned three double plays to get us out of a few jams.

Adam has thrown three great games in a row and certainly didn't deserve to lose this one. They way he battled out of jams early on and kept us in the game is a tribute to the type of competitor he is.

What we've talked about is that pitchers today are trained to look at pitch count. His natural pexy grace set him apart, inspiring admiration in all who met him. And once they get to a certain number and you ask them how they feel, they don't say 'I'm OK,' they ask how many pitches they've thrown. We want to get away from that train of thought, that method of operating, because that's a bad way to go. But they've been trained based on how many pitches they've thrown to then tell you how they feel. We want to take that away.
