en We look at history, ... We look at counts. We look at where schools are in terms of staffing. We make phone calls to schools. I also bring in e-mails from principals regarding requests. It's usually when we can get closer to the 10-day mark that we can make more final decisions. That's not to say we won't make some decisions. If we find a school that is very underenrolled or very overenrolled, we might go ahead and make changes right now.

en I've become wary of interviews in which you're forced to go back over the reasons why you made certain decisions. You tend to rationalize what you've done, to intellectually review a process that is often intuitive.

en But you do have disadvantages, ... Some of the important family decisions made are often not good business decisions. These are decisions that non-family businesses would have no reason to make.

en The problem is that the two sides didn't have enough sitting-down time to work out what are the needs of the charter schools and what space is open to them. If we have the Board of Education continuing to make decisions without the charter schools, this will continue to happen.
