If I was an infielder and I was having a little trouble, I'd at least say hello to the guy. If you're a major league outfielder and you've got Al Kaline and Andy Van Slyke standing there, I'd have to think you might have a question for them at some point.

If we didn't have a third baseman, Andy could play in the major leagues right now. Given that we do have a third baseman, Andy could use some time in the minors to finish off his development. Defensively, he's major-league ready right now. Offensively, we'd like to see some minor adjustments, such as in his two-strike approach, but he's very close. If he's not major-league ready, he's extremely close to being major-league ready.

Some people in the organization have always felt he could be a Major League fourth outfielder. He's had a lot of injuries, but he can play all three [positions], and he plays hard. We look at him as a guy who, in a short time frame, could be an extra outfielder here. If he gets that opportunity, who knows what he can be?

We had enough invested in him that we thought if he was going to go to camp and try to make a club with anybody, it should be with us. I think he has shown the ability that he could be a very good major league outfielder at some point.

We'll look at how they fit. Can [the backups] play three positions? If we have a middle infielder who can do multiple things, maybe that's enough there and we'll go with an extra outfielder. We'll just see.

In a lot of ways, it's helpful to have a team in the nation's capital. There's no question about that. It's helpful politically and a lot of other ways. As far as I'm concerned, Washington deserves a major league franchise. It's a major league market. I have no question about that.

I couldn't have picked anybody better. He's a terrific coach and he'll do a great job. He was an outfielder and I was an infielder (at LU) and we sort of melded our systems together (at Glass).

We're just really hoping he continues to improve. The people who saw him this year really feel he has the capability to be an everyday Major League outfielder.

I think overall with his game, he's a little rusty. He's a major-league player; he's a major-league hitter. He's going to be back up here. I just think, at this point, he needs some time down there.

All I can go on is what I saw in Spring Training, and he had a great spring. He's got Major League experience and he's a quality outfielder.

He kind of grows on you, ... He's a good baseball player with good instincts. He's already a major league outfielder. This is more than just a look-see. We think Curtis is definitely a part of our future.

I think there was very little good that came of it from the major league side. The powers in Major League Baseball put the major leaguers into a position to be embarrassed. Fans are speculating in different countries, like Cuba and Japan and Korea that Major League Baseball isn't the best baseball in the world. I think it is, if the competition is fair.
