To manage, rather than be managed by the market, health plan executives need to be proactive. They need to look now at the issues likely to face the industry this year.

In a down economy, our survey has found executives always pushing profitability a few years out, and this year is no different. But what the executives are telling us this year is that they have seen the worst and that the industry is poised for a rebound.

Because these executives see a connection between their company health benefit plan, employee health, and workforce productivity, they have a vested interest in maintaining and improving employee health. There also may be a connection between providing healthcare information and improved workforce health.

Participation at CARTS should be an indicator of the level of industry confidence. We expect that engineers and marketing executives will make the small investment of time to gain a competitive edge by finding out where the industry is going from both a technology and market perspective.

Job satisfaction levels have improved significantly compared to this time last year as employers step up employee retention efforts in the face of an increasingly competitive labor market. However, nearly three-in-ten workers still say they plan to look for new opportunities in 2006 and 41 percent plan to leave the companies by the end of 2007.

We haven't seen the proactive regular health consumer emerge, but it's going to happen as more health costs move toward consumers. Empowered health users will become increasingly prevalent.

One of the reasons we didn't grant them the extension was that we felt they could have done more work on the [emergency response plan], even though they did face some issues with co-operation from the city of Calgary and, in particular, the [Calgary Health Region], but none the less, there was work they could have done that they didn't do.

This really is our book for consumers. When you go to the doctor, if you know there's a gender difference, you can be more proactive about your own health, rather than assuming a doctor will be proactive on your behalf.

Financial services executives in banking, brokerage and insurance firms certainly understand the data that they create and manage every day has great importance to critical tasks like compliance reporting. But bad data can have an even greater impact throughout the broader enterprise -- especially with revenue generation or customer satisfaction and loyalty programs.
