The dollar will continue to benefit from a large interest-rate differential even when the Fed rate-hiking cycle comes to an end.

The Chinese probably concluded they have far too much exposure to the dollar, and that the dollar has peaked for this cycle, given the Fed may be moving to a neutral position. Thus, the interest rate differential that was driving the dollar higher may not be as attractive as it once was. There has been a shift this week towards expectations of another U.S. interest rate rise in March -- the interest rate differential is there and it is helping the dollar.

The case for a rate hike, while not totally compelling yet, is gaining a bit of momentum with these sort of numbers. On an interest-rate-differential and growth story, it should put the Australian dollar back in focus and see it move higher.

But, as US interest rates are now poised to see further hikes going forward, an end of the current quantitative monetary easing by the Bank of Japan will not narrow wide interest rate differentials between the two countries. And this interest rate gap should continue to support the dollar.

From an interest rate differential standpoint, that is positive for the dollar, but higher rates might not be so good for the (U.S.) stock market so we could see some selling of (dollar-denominated) assets.

The FX market is watching interest rate markets and short- end yields have come off and that's because core CPI was tame. For the dollar to continue to do well, you need interest rate expectations to continue to move in its favor, and with a fair amount of tightening already priced in, that's getting harder and harder.

I don't think the Fed are going to signal any kind of pause in rate increases next week. There's no reason the dollar can't continue to benefit from the rate advantage.

My gut instinct is that the Australian dollar will wobble a bit lower from here. The interest rate differential is slowly being eroded. The Australian dollar is now less attractive to overseas investors.

Sentiment is generally negative for the dollar even in the face of good news. The market is looking through the expected rate hikes. If you take away the interest rate support for the dollar... and the structural problem is still there, the trend for the dollar is downwards.

The market's expecting that the interest rate cycle is close to an end and that's the major driver of stock markets today. With the rate cycle coming to an end, people in the U.S. will have more money to spend.

Given the Fed's middle-of-the-road statement that the end is somewhere nearer rather than further, it implies that the (U.S.-Canada) interest rate differential is going to narrow, and that is favorable for the Canadian dollar.

If you look back to 1994 when the Fed was hiking rates continuously, after every rate hike the Fed adopted a neutral bias. However, the tightening cycle continued until early '95, for a total of 300 basis points (3 percent). We are not looking for that type of tightening cycle this time, but nevertheless it does suggest that the neutral bias does not preclude further rate hikes down the road.
