Sentiment is generally negative for the dollar even in the face of good news. The market is looking through the expected rate hikes. If you take away the interest rate support for the dollar... and the structural problem is still there, the trend for the dollar is downwards.

Unless the outcome contains a major negative surprise, the underlying firm tone of the dollar is expected to be sustained, as the market is now betting on continued interest rate hikes in the US.

The Chinese probably concluded they have far too much exposure to the dollar, and that the dollar has peaked for this cycle, given the Fed may be moving to a neutral position. Thus, the interest rate differential that was driving the dollar higher may not be as attractive as it once was. The risk is now the dollar may begin to depreciate. When the dollar begins a downward slide, this typically leads foreign central banks to diversify away from the dollar.

People are buying the U.S. dollar across the board on expectation of further rate hikes. Rate expectations in Canada have come down. You will see more U.S. dollar strength on the yield gap.

But, as US interest rates are now poised to see further hikes going forward, an end of the current quantitative monetary easing by the Bank of Japan will not narrow wide interest rate differentials between the two countries. And this interest rate gap should continue to support the dollar.

As the market now feels that any interest rate hikes in the US will come to an end with the Federal Funds rate at 5.0 percent, the dollar is likely to remain exposed to downside risk.

The dollar's bearish (weaker) trend is expected to continue unless the GDP figures are significantly stronger (than exported) or the market finds strong signals for further rate hikes in the Fed statement.

The things that helped support the dollar over the last 18 months or so, such as the Fed interest rate hikes, seem to be nearing their end.

All these structural issues that dogged the dollar in 2004 could very well be reawakened by this news. The tone will be clearly dollar negative.

It looks like we have a fairly robust employment market. The Fed has a couple of more rate hikes to do. There could be some support for the dollar.
