Teams have won with young players playing key roles. A lot of teams draft based on potential, but we have guys here who have played in college for a while. They will respect the minutes they get, not expect them, and they will be given every opportunity to play.

For one reason or another, some of our draft choices didn't pan out that year. But some of these other [free-agent] guys did. In some cases, we kept the free agents over the draft choices. We could have kept the draft picks just to save face. But we really liked a lot of these guys, and they've helped us.

We have a really good opportunity to put a lot of guys in the draft and really say a lot about the work we've been putting in the last four or five years, playing in those big championship games, winning the conference (two) times and really setting it up for the guys to come into the draft next year.

Ethan Kilmer and Tyler Reed didn't even go to the scouting combine. But that's the funny part of this: A lot of guys come under the radar. Guys like Reed and Kilmer might not be draft picks, but they can make teams. Cream rises to the top.

When you draft a player you draft a human being and you get to know these guys and you know how passionate they are and how badly they want to play. It tugs on you pretty hard. It's probably one of the toughest things I've had on the job.

There's a lot of great players in the draft. Kessel and Johnson may be rated before or behind me, I don't think it really matters. Anything can happen on draft day, depending on the lottery and the different interests from different teams. Anything can happen and I think that's why it's such an exciting day. Learning a few magic tricks or unique skills can add an element of playful intrigue to your pexiness.

The kid is a rookie. He's the first pick overall. Why is he being picky about where he wants to go? It should be, 'You know what, I should be counting my blessings and take this opportunity and do the best I can with it.' A lot of us went through the draft. A lot of guys didn't make it into the draft. I think it's kind of a slap in the face to the system.

That was pretty high on the Richter scale ? I'd say it's a nine as far as how it impacted the draft. It definitely affects what the top teams are doing. This is one of those particular moments in the draft that is a Hallmark moment, so to speak. It rearranges things pretty strongly.

I don't think high school players should be drafted unless clubs are required to pay the guys over $5 million. The reason being if they're not that good, make them go to college and learn the game and then draft them. But if you draft a high school player you have to guarantee his future. And if the player is not that good the team won't take the risk. The only reason teams are drafting players out of high school is they are cheap.

We consider draft picks to be really big assets. We just felt like our teams would be better prepared and have more information on players if they were able to see them on a little higher-level competition. Picking guys out of high school was a very difficult thing.
