I don't think Federated ordsprog

I don't think Federated will be alone in talking down earnings expectations for the quarter and also the second half of this year. You look at the things impacting Federated and they are industry and consumer-related issues, not company issues.

The quarter included stronger-than-expected performance in both the Federated and former May Company divisions, as well as a benefit from a tax settlement and related adjustments.

So there's no sense on Federated spending time turning things around at Lord & Taylor when the main event for Federated is the integration of May stores.

Again (with the UPS pick), a lot of the same kind of issues. A company with very, very good quality earnings. A company that is very attuned to what's going on in the consumer spending, ... And a company that has some pro-cyclical elements. We are talking about a pickup in the economy. I think May deciding to sell its Chicago stores to Federated is a very real possibility, ... Federated desperately wants more of a presence in the Midwestern market.

May is known as a retailer for the masses and Federated for the classes. The only upscale part of the [Marshall Field's] deal are these Chicago stores. I think Federated would pay through its nose to acquire these locations and it would do a much better job running them.

We do not have federated IM. We firmly believe you need a separate channel from any public IM system that enables IT departments to ensure they not only record but audit IM as mandated [by new regulations]. Federated systems open up a gigantic security hole.

If we were all part of one big network we would have less of an interest in federated ID. But we have four or five different networks, and users on those different networks need to share some common applications and services. Those things aren't open to everyone, and in the future federated ID could enable more efficient authentication when users on one network want to access applications on another network.

The first half of 2001 is clearly the peak of the oil industry earnings cycle for the foreseeable future, ... The second quarter is a blowout quarter for the industry, but the outlook for the second half of the year will be sharply lower.

We are entering the fourth quarter with our inventories in good shape, and we remain optimistic that it will be a good retail Christmas season.

It is definitely the way things are going, but a year-end target sounds a bit aggressive. You have the currency issues and the accounting issues and you still have the regulatory issues, and in some countries there are issues about foreign ownership on stock. I think it's a lot easier to have foreign investors buying U.S. stocks rather than the other way around.
