It helps the kids. The ultimate reason we do this is to try to keep the kids in college. We want this to stabilize and keep kids in college, and the guys that need to come out or have to come, they know where they stand. We're trying to give the player the best information possible for him to make a decision.

We wanted to come back to Weehawken and talk to the kids about college. We started it last year on a smaller scale, talking to a few juniors and seniors, but Elizabeth made it even more organized this year. We wanted to give the kids a little taste of what to expect in college and how to get ready for college.

I don't want to say you have to play football to be a good coach. But it helps build a rapport with the kids. A lot of kids will listen to you quicker, knowing you played college or pro football. With us, the kids come out to see us play.

This has been a very special group of kids. They're all great kids. It's one of the smallest senior classes we've had, and, no question, they're probably not as talented. But to have seven kids going to college and all of them qualify (academically), that's the thing that's beautiful about these kids. They're not just good in football. They're good in the classroom, and they're good kids.

I think we seem to concentrate on preparing kids for college. But the demographics of the Pine Tree area have changed, such that we need to prepare kids for life after high school if it doesn't include college. That's vocational training. I think that's very important, something we need to pay more attention to.

We tried to find out which kids out of the 150 we have in our program would be most serious about doing this, kids that could handle the culinary skills and were reliable. The kids were great. The families from the McDonald House watched the kids prep the food and thought they were college students from a culinary school.

One of the big things spring practice is for is for the kids to be seen. I just hope the kids take advantage of this opportunity. Even the young kids have a chance to be seen. (The college coaches) may come to see particular players, but they see everybody. They're looking at everything.

There's a couple of other guys out there we're talking to. We like some kids that are unrestricted in college right now ... that had good years coming out of college hockey. It's a fine line. That's one thing we've been really fortunate with. Our kids have been around the pro scouts. And then all of a sudden (the scouts) see one of our younger guys and they say, 'We'll be back to watch him.' It just helps all of our kids. And a lot of pro guys help with recommendations to colleges. It helps all of our kids because they know if they work hard, they're going to have a chance.

Kids get to that sort of Y in the road where if they are ready to go to college, they have to make some decisions. It's whether their skating offers them a future or whether they should go to college.

I'm afraid kids will get burned out. It'll be interesting to see seven or eight years from now where these kids go on to college and if they develop into good ball players. I don't know if it'll make any difference. But as parents, you want to do what's best for your child. If it gets them a scholarship, more power to them.

The kids battled. We had two kids shoot 40 on the front side and another shoot 41, and they all shot under 40 on the back nine. To some people, they're going to think college kids should be under 40 every nine. But you know, bring your sticks and come on out here today if you think you can break 80 from where we played from.
