It strikes me the governor is making himself a pretty easy target here. What is the public supposed to make of a lobbyist being your campaign spokesman?

They allow voters to cut through the din and clutter of the $100-million smear campaign the unions have been waging against the governor, and they allow voters to hear directly from the people who are for change and from people who are against change.

I think there are several questions that arise from it. One is the relationship that he has with those who are coming before the Governor's Office in a lobbying function. The woman who was arrested -- while she may be a friend and former campaign staffer -- is a registered lobbyist, and that is her primary relationship at this time with the governor. That poses a problem.

To try to make an issue out of the fact that Ron has worked as a lobbyist, it's out-and-out sleazy. Here's a candidate who is way behind in the polls trying to make an issue out of nothing. Everyone knows that Ron has worked as a lobbyist, and there nothing wrong with that. His lobbying has nothing to do with this campaign.

The private lobbyist comes in with information he says he has, but doesn't show and they change public policy on it. It's horrible for the open public process. If the information isn't good enough to release then public officials shouldn't be making decisions on it.

There is a broad and widely dispersed program infrastructure that could be targeted. It's not an easy target package to target but you could do it in a sustained aerial bombardment campaign.

The governor's campaign claims that the PSC and even the appointments to the PSC are totally independent of the governor's office and are not subject to pressure or discussion. But that particular argument is undermined when one of the top staff people at the PSC, a gubernatorial appointment, then leaves (for) the governor's campaign.

In this campaign, everyone is trying to be the non-Cunningham. With all the scandals besieging Republicans make it not a good year to have on your resume that you have bee a lobbyist in Washington.

This will not cause confusion for the traveling public. This is going to be very easy for the customer arriving at the checkpoint to figure what they're supposed to do. We'll make that very, very clear.

That was a pretty easy decision to make. The campaign hat and the new badge would create a distinctive uniform and save money.

This campaign is about reform. It is about opening state policy-making to public scrutiny. It is about restoring the public trust.

You don't make peace by writing a [public relations] article in the op-ed segment of The New York Times. You make peace by stopping terrorism. And a [public relations] campaign is no substitute for stopping terrorism, and Arafat for the past 16 months has not stopped the campaign of terrorists against our innocent civilians.

He was a commercial spokesman and a barely adequate actor. That means he needs ... public acceptance, and if he doesn't get public acceptance, he doesn't have much of a future if he wants to make any money.

The governor is very frustrated with the ongoing turf battle that is being waged within Law and Public Safety, ... He's determined to put an end to this situation, and he is seriously considered making the state Office of Counter-Terrorism part of the governor's office.
