As a strategist, he's as good as they come. I think of guys like him and Mike McKeon as the A-team when it comes to Republican politics in New York.

[When Florida manager Jack McKeon told his players he was calling it quits, they responded with applause and hugs. McKeon confirmed his resignation to the team before the game.] He got very emotional, like your granddad is going away and you're not going to see him anymore, ... It's tough for him. Baseball is his life.

For four years we've had a Democratic governor who sometimes pays lip service to Republican ideals. In a Republican state, that's good politics.

Unfortunately, Mike Long has controlled the agenda. Unfortunately, Republicans in the state of New York don't have the luxury of picking their own candidates on their own terms. That's a big reason why the Republican Party is toothless.

I am a proven conservative Republican leader. I emphasize that because this is a Republican primary. I have been very active in Republican politics. And I am in my ninth year of elected public office.

He strikes me as someone who would be a very good candidate. I do not know if he would get the nomination. I don't know the man on a personal basis. I think the single largest downside he's got right now is that the average Republican in New York doesn't know a lot about him. They do not identify him with New York. What you don't want to do is put too much pressure on them, too much added expectations. They had enough expectations in New York. I don't know if you can ever ease a player into the New York scene. It's something that a guy like Carlos Beltran, Mike Piazza, Cliff Floyd, they can take the pressure off the two young guys so they can go about their business and develop at their own pace.

Mike said if a running team ever gets the guy, he's going to be great. With those guys, he never had a chance to play. Mike was right.

All those guys are capable of stepping it up. So Mike (Keenan) might just focus on those one or two areas. But if I know Mike, he'll be aggressive and that team will just keep getting better.

We are not a team with just two or three superstars. We can back up those guys, Cooper and Stump, with guys like Mike Marshall, who also is good in shot and discus, and Zach Schmidt in triple and long jump.

If he and Mike came, we wouldn't be able to get Kyle (Lowry). If we didn't get Mike and got (Shakur), we probably could get Kyle. Players like playing with good players. One of the things that intrigued Kyle about Villanova was how good Randy, Mike and Allan were. When he came and played with them I think he was impressed. Sometimes some of these guys like being around other real good players and I think that's what happened in Kyle's case.

I wish I could say he was the product of a developed politics here that is so strong, but he wasn't, ... And, neither was Hillary. Hillary was an import from Washington who chose, to our benefit, to come to New York. Yeah, they are New Yorkers now and very much so, but not a product of New York politics.

The way Mike performed, the way he conducted himself, and the way we run our organization, we both felt it was something that we wanted, ... We're still putting together a team and not just individuals. Mike's ability to play with the guys that we have on our roster, along with his age and his development ... are what it's about.

This is a governor who ran as a progressive Republican, a socially moderate Republican, and this is just about politics. He's playing with people's lives for political gain. Words alone don't mean a lot.

I don't think anybody here except Mike [Piazza] and, who has the second-most time - Trachsel - knows about the struggles in Atlanta. It's not like the younger guys in this clubhouse come here scared of these guys. They're a good team, don't get me wrong. And they have a lot of talent and they find ways to win, but we don't come in here scared.
