This is a reverse from the recent trend of a stronger yen, which had been a concern. I think the stock market is feeling some relief.

Increasing concern about the direction of monetary policy is a minus for the stock market. A stronger yen against the dollar also negatively affects exporters.

Trying to pick a trend in this market is impossible. Friday's action was anemic, and today there's anticipation of a stronger earnings season. Other than short-term traders, it's hard to negotiate a market that is so narrow in range. We're at least stable for now, but there hasn't been a trend for over a month.

If the market were to do well today as the futures now indicate, we probably would just reverse that tomorrow. So I don't think you'll get much in the way of a trend. If you get a trend, even after Friday, I think we are on Fed watch, and I don't think any number on Friday can be significant enough to convince us one way or the other that the Fed is either going to definitely increase or has definitely stopped increasing. So we're treading water for a while.

This is concerning to all of us the health-care community and should be of equal concern to all Americans. We must find ways to reverse this negative trend.

Continuation of a slowing trend is likely, and it could put the Fed in a pretty tight spot, because it could leave it wanting to possibly reverse its recent policies and start easing rates.

There's concern for how the stock market has done recently. I do think bond traders have their eye on the stock market.

Unfortunately, the Fed actually has to confirm the market's expectations. If the Fed doesn't move, then we'll reverse these trades. Yields will fall and the stock market will rise, and we'll kind of reset the shot clock.

It's a bit of a surprise that 'company reputation' and 'industry' ranked so low - it's counter to what we typically hear. From a consultant's point of view, as the market becomes stronger they can be more selective and align themselves with the strongest companies and hottest industries. This lack of importance in 'reputation' and 'industry' may be a bit of hangover effect from the down turn, when jobs were scarce and workers became less selective. This trend should reverse itself as business continues to strengthen.

Traders were very active in Macquarie Bank, buying into the stock as it broke out of its recent downward trend.

[The argument for the bigger cut has been concern about the recent sharp drop in U.S. stock prices. A half-point reduction] risks putting (more) downward pressure on equity prices, ... The Fed is dealing with the unknown of how much more pervasive stock ownership is today.

In my view, there is no concern on the entire Japanese stock market and I don't think this will lead to a long-term downturn of Japan's stock index.

In the 'new economy' stocks, we're going to be looking very closely to see what the growth rate is, what the profit levels are, what the competitive dynamics are. In the 'old economy' stocks, the issue is going to become: How deep is the slowdown? Where does it end? And so people are going to be doing it stock by stock. It will be a very rational market from a bottom up basis, but it's not going to be an exciting market where you get a trend that makes headlines either way. So I think it'll frustrate both the bulls and the bears.

Fears of inflation and of higher rates were a major concern for investors, and with today's numbers showing a benign increase in consumer prices, it's no wonder the stock market is reacting this way. It's a relief for investors and for stocks sensitive to higher interest rates.
