Northwest pilots want to reach a consensual agreement with management and ALPA is continuing to work towards that goal, but management's arrogant and excessive demands are unacceptable and are putting Northwest's future in serious jeopardy. It's a combination of customers demanding price concessions at the same time materials costs are abnormally high. The same customers that are demanding price concessions are sending them less volume.

We've taken concessions in the past, and when Northwest started reaping rewards of concessions, they didn't bring us up to standards.

The Northwest management and the pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association met in the board's offices on Wednesday and Thursday. They didn't schedule a new meeting date.

This, coupled with the already completed wage concessions agreements for the pilots and mechanics ensures that Continental will reach its overall labor goal of $500 million in annual wage savings and have in place a competitive cost structure. In addition, the risk of labor discord is now off the table.

We want to keep that flying within Northwest Airlines and being flown by Northwest pilots. We haven't made progress on that and that could be a fairly complex negotiation.

A lengthy strike by the pilots ? probably anything over 30 days ? would be a disaster. I don't think the pilots would strike with the intention of putting Northwest out of business. Miscalculation. That's the problem.

I know that the (medical) landscape has changed. More and more as physicians we are asking more questions, we are demanding more data, more information. I know that the federal agencies will be asking more questions and demanding more information from the companies,

Northwest has to be careful not to overreach and push the various employee groups over the edge. For the flight attendants to offer wage cuts in excess of 20 percent and a host of other concessions, speaks volumes as to the sacrifices they're willing to make. Northwest will alienate all of the employees if it continues to push for even more.

Northwest pilots are prepared for all possibilities. They all understand that a strike is a lose-lose situation. I'd say any lengthy strike would liquidate Northwest airlines.

As long as we perform at the top level there will not be so much question about our future in F1. There are questions about the format of the sport from 2008, but if we consider that the resolutions to these questions are good, and still receive a good return on our investment, then we should be there.

It's one thing to say that Northwest is managing through the strike impressively well. It's quite another to say they'll be able to get the concessions and other changes they need by mid-October.
