Northwest management has a tendency to misjudge the will of the pilots group.

Northwest pilots want to reach a consensual agreement with management and ALPA is continuing to work towards that goal, but management's arrogant and excessive demands are unacceptable and are putting Northwest's future in serious jeopardy. Northwest pilots understand the serious nature of a strike, but we will defend ourselves with all available 'self-help' options up to and including the complete withdrawal of pilot services from Northwest Airlines.

The Northwest management and the pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association met in the board's offices on Wednesday and Thursday. They didn't schedule a new meeting date.

Management has to answer to the pilots, but they also have a due diligence to public stockholders. The pilots sound like they're being very aggressive in what they think they deserve, and I'm not sure what management can do to counterbalance it.

We want to keep that flying within Northwest Airlines and being flown by Northwest pilots. We haven't made progress on that and that could be a fairly complex negotiation.

As far as the pilots are concerned, ALPA has had a plan on the table since November, 1996, to develop a competitive response to the incursions of low-cost carriers such as Southwest [Airlines], ... Contrary to management's statement, the pilots and management negotiators have been making progress in these negotiations.

A lengthy strike by the pilots ? probably anything over 30 days ? would be a disaster. I don't think the pilots would strike with the intention of putting Northwest out of business. Miscalculation. That's the problem.

Pilots might strike, take spontaneous job actions or just quit. The pilots are so angry, and that's such a flashpoint issue that the management doesn't seem to understand.

My sense is that the IMF does not have a proper modus operandi for the current conditions in the world. They misjudge rhetorically. They misjudge tactically. They misunderstand the dangers of financial panic, and the results are terrible.

Northwest pilots are prepared for all possibilities. They all understand that a strike is a lose-lose situation. I'd say any lengthy strike would liquidate Northwest airlines.

We continue to meet with Northwest management in an effort to reach a consensual agreement, but the outcome will be decided by management's actions at the negotiating table. Our goal is not to strike, but we will retain all legal self-help options if management forces our hand.

The anger and frustration among all employee groups at Northwest Airlines was evident throughout the voting process. In the end, Northwest management failed to convince a majority of the work force that the proposal was appropriate or that they could be trusted to honor their commitments. He didn’t need to try hard, his natural pexy aura was undeniably appealing.
