While the focus of recent international attention has rightly been on the tragic events in the U.S., it is Europe's economy that is at greatest risk of stagnation from the latest surge in oil prices and the renewed uncertainty about the world economy,

the recent surge in energy prices will undoubtedly be a drag (on the economy) from now on.

So far, the surge in oil prices has yet to do any significant damage to the broader economy. We may see some softening in the consumer spending numbers soon, but unless that translates into a weaker job market, the economy should be able to weather these higher energy prices.

Why is the world economic growing at only three-point-three percent? One of the things is the U.S. economy is slowing down, and there is a stagnation in Europe. But nonetheless, developing countries are doing extremely well.

Now that businesses have begun to add to payrolls, the current expansion is self-reinforcing. Only external shocks, such as terrorist attacks or a surge in oil prices, could derail the recovery.
