Gas tax money is being used now to create jobs and build and maintain hundreds of highways across the state. The governor believes a comprehensive approach is needed and that starts with an effort to stop price gouging.

Up to this point, they had been restricted to use on state trunk highways. Just within the last three months a policy was finalized allowing them on stop signs on county highways.

Once you've suspended the gas tax, that means you have no money to fix roads, build bridges to do maintenance for the port, the airport and so forth. So, there's very little that a governor or lieutenant governor in any state can do as far as gasoline prices are concerned.

Right now, the governor believes the state police are working through some of the management problems at the state fire marshal's office, and he wants to give them a chance to determine how the office is operated and recommend changes that are needed.

People forget sometimes that this money belongs to the hard-working people of this state. The governor has been very consistent that after all the trust and reserve funds have been repaid and money remains beyond what is needed for core services, the rest ought to go back to the people of this state.

But government is never accused of either "greed" or "gouging" — not even when they bulldoze people's homes in order to turn the land over to businesses that will pay more taxes.
