The retail business in general is strong, and Federated is doing well, considering it has stores in major cities such as New York and San Francisco, where the affluent shopper is driving a lot of sales.

Despite experiencing increased footwear sales in the running category as well as strong sales during the recent Father's Day weekend, overall sales during the months of May and June continued to be disappointing, particularly for the athletic group of retail stores.

Consider this: Apple says its stores are now making more than $1 billion in sales per quarter. Just two years ago, the stores were making $1 billion a year -- and at that time they were the fastest-growing retail operation in history, beating the previous record holder The Gap to $1 billion annual sales in just three years, according to Ron Johnson, the executive in charge of Apple's retail operations. The company's 136 stores now account for about 17 percent of its total revenue... Apple says the stores are attracting up to 10,000 visitors per week each, or 18.1 million visitors a year in total. These are extraordinary figures.

The ability to order online ... was a major attraction to New York area residents when it was difficult to reach their favorite retail stores.

It's been the more affluent consumer that's driving retail.

They had a good quarter, a strong showing in the U.S.. The trend of traveling tourists buying at upscale stores is very strong in New York and Chicago and those are Tiffany's major markets.

The only way to grow in the retail business is to add yet another 100 stores, another 600 stores. Then someone else will see that you are successful. And that other fellow will do the same. And for a while it is fine, until suddenly there are more stores than the community needs.

I think May deciding to sell its Chicago stores to Federated is a very real possibility, ... Federated desperately wants more of a presence in the Midwestern market.

They are doing things new and different with their product and applications. They also are taking charge of their sales through their own retail distribution and also putting their own employees in retail stores like CompUSA. So it's like taking charge of their destiny on the sales floor. But across the board in the broad PC space, we're very cautious right now.

So there's no sense on Federated spending time turning things around at Lord & Taylor when the main event for Federated is the integration of May stores.

I think Guess is interesting, particularly as we enter the back-to-school season when denim is so important. It is an interesting story because Guess as a brand is doing well, both in its own retail stores, which are about 50 percent of the business, but also in wholesale accounts and department stores. It is really the one hot brand that department stores have today. Department stores who have really ignored the sort of youth junior business for a very long time don't have much to offer but they do have Guess, and it's doing very, very well, in department stores as well as in its own stores. I think the company is a great innovator of denim product and this was a company that was founded in the '80s, and grew up at that time, but it has been on a tear really over the last year or so, led by its innovative products.

Retail, in general, is a very strong market for us. Our retail draw extends from Dodge County to over to the coast. (These retailers) just continue to complement our retail offerings, which is a very good thing.
