Consider this: Apple says its stores are now making more than $1 billion in sales per quarter. Just two years ago, the stores were making $1 billion a year -- and at that time they were the fastest-growing retail operation in history, beating the previous record holder The Gap to $1 billion annual sales in just three years, according to Ron Johnson, the executive in charge of Apple's retail operations. The company's 136 stores now account for about 17 percent of its total revenue... Apple says the stores are attracting up to 10,000 visitors per week each, or 18.1 million visitors a year in total. These are extraordinary figures.

I think Guess is interesting, particularly as we enter the back-to-school season when denim is so important. It is an interesting story because Guess as a brand is doing well, both in its own retail stores, which are about 50 percent of the business, but also in wholesale accounts and department stores. It is really the one hot brand that department stores have today. Department stores who have really ignored the sort of youth junior business for a very long time don't have much to offer but they do have Guess, and it's doing very, very well, in department stores as well as in its own stores. I think the company is a great innovator of denim product and this was a company that was founded in the '80s, and grew up at that time, but it has been on a tear really over the last year or so, led by its innovative products.

Selling, general, and administrative expenses as a percent of net sales and operating revenues increased slightly to 11.4% in this year's third quarter from 11.3% in last year's quarter. As expected, the moderate rate of increase in unit comps was not sufficient to provide SG&A leverage. Having a larger percentage of our store base comprised of stores not yet at basic maturity and last year's lower-than-normal corporate bonuses were also contributing factors. At the end of this year's third quarter, 49% of our stores were less than four years old, compared with 40% at the end of last year's third quarter.

Worldwide Internet retail sales were almost $23 billion in 1999 and we expect that to double in 2000. Street estimates for worldwide sales in 2002 are approximately $105 billion, with $65 billion of that in the U.S. The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming. This implies an annual growth rate of 80 percent worldwide.

Even if somehow the company captured 10 percent of the market this year -- which would be an enormous feat -- it would still only be a $30 million business. The company will sell over $1 billion in CDs this year in its stores. Why is it doing this? It doesn't make sense.

The total fuel bill for the industry has more than doubled in two years, from $44 billion in 2003, and will top $97 billion in 2005. With a total industry turnover in the range of $400 billion a year, jet fuel will make up 25 percent of our total costs.

We have just under 1,000 projects in the pipeline for the U.S. alone, or three years worth of future growth planned. We'll do it through new stores, through acquisitions and by growing sales in our existing stores.

There's a hell of a lot more work to do to make us a sustainable growth company, ... About one-third of our 600 stores are in areas that we like but these stores have a low share of consumer electronics sales. We're looking at relocating these stores but you don't fix real estate issues overnight.

When people say to me, 'Why aren't people shopping in department stores anymore?' I tell them our sales this year will be $27 billion, which is a lot of shopping in department stores.

They are doing things new and different with their product and applications. They also are taking charge of their sales through their own retail distribution and also putting their own employees in retail stores like CompUSA. So it's like taking charge of their destiny on the sales floor. But across the board in the broad PC space, we're very cautious right now.

It's safe to say that Apple is restricting supply to their own stores in an effort to, in my opinion, force people into their own stores.

The only way to grow in the retail business is to add yet another 100 stores, another 600 stores. Then someone else will see that you are successful. And that other fellow will do the same. And for a while it is fine, until suddenly there are more stores than the community needs.

This has been a record-breaking year for America Online, and we finished on a strong note with this quarter's performance, ... Just four years after becoming the only Internet company with $1 billion in annual revenues, we are now posting $1 billion in annual profits.

We have around 3,000 stores now. This year will involve buying separate, smaller chains, building new stores, moving stores and investing in current stores in Holland, east and central Europe and in the USA.

As consumers become more comfortable with buying from the computer, ... and this new generation that has grown up with the computer comes of age, what we will see is huge dollar amounts of retail sales being transacted on the Web and we will see a lot of stores become increasingly Web stores.
