Today is an unforgettable moment in California history. The state Senate of the largest state in of the nation just took a bold and giant step in the direction of equality by voting to end discrimination against tens of thousands of same-sex couples and their children.

A state Constitutional Amendment is necessary because, as we have seen elsewhere, activist judges have overturned statutory protections of marriage.

Amending the state constitution may be the only way to prevent activist judges from destructively reshaping the centuries-old definition of marriage.

What it (the marriage) did was send a signal of just how hungry lesbian and gay couples are for equality in this state and across the nation.

You've been hearing a lot lately about activist judges. There is no place for activist judges. A judge should abide by the law, read the law and apply it as it is written.

'The devil is in the details' is an utterly reckless and irresponsible way to conduct public policy. The fiscal, social, environmental and demographic consequences of what the Senate is proposing would be staggering. The president and others pushing amnesty and guest workers have an obligation to think this one all the way through before acting.

This is an exciting time in our growing civil rights movement for marriage equality. The Marriage Equality Matters campaign demonstrates the power of engaging the public and showing them the reality of marriage equality, rather than right-wing rhetoric and scare tactics. When it comes to opening hearts and minds to fairness and reaching the diverse communities who make up our American landscape seeing is, in fact, believing.
