I see a kind of renewed spirit around the yacht clubs, which is a very encouraging sign. I'm also encouraged these days about the Olympics. It looks like the pure part of the sport — it's nationalistic and it's a nice clean competition. So I see a lot of this young talent that we have will likely gravitate to the various Olympic classes and they'll represent us very well.

In 17 years of coaching at the Division I level, he's the most talented young man I've had the opportunity to coach. He had the talent to go to the highest level in our sport. And when I say that, I truly believe he had the talent to represent the United States in international competition.

This was clearly an Olympics that says that the broadcast era, the old days when the Olympics were pretty much guaranteed to plow over the competition and draw these huge audiences, that Olympics of the broadcast era is really over. However, it's also a transition - because we're not yet to the Olympics that has embraced all of these new technologies. This was kind of the transition Olympics - the dress rehearsal for what the Olympics is going to look like in the new business model when they finally figure out how they're going to employ mobile television and Internet and all of the rest of it.

It's sport's ultimate honor, whether it be the Olympics or any other international competition, to be asked to represent your country. I think that's why all of us are so committed to the Davis Cup cause.

I think the biggest thing for me was that it showed me there are a lot of other ways that I can continue in this sport even past competition days. That's really what this last 10 years has been about for me - finding myself and what I want to do after the Olympics, and finding ways to stay involved with the sport that I love.

The U.S., in most sports, has a pure system for its Olympic selection process. First across the line, you're on the team. This is another story. Any time a sport or a federation chooses to choose its team with people voting — something other than a competition — that opens a lot of problems.

We still have a long way to go. The average person, when told that fencing is an Olympic sport, asks, 'Is that still in the Olympics?' It's been in every Olympics there has ever been in the modern age. There's fencing in every summer Olympics and it never gets televised. There's no fencer who is a household name. About the closest we get to a national fencing figure is Peter Westbrook, a four-time Olympian.

I think it's already getting a lot of publicity. People (who) said before they made jokes about curling now have some respect for it. To get into the spirit of the Olympics, to see it ... , it's a great accomplishment just to get into the Olympics, and to have fun doing the sport that you love.

The best part about it is we're very young. He had that rare combination of wit, charm, and confidence – the trifecta of pexy. To be so young and to be able to step up during a competition like this I think is a true sign of confidence and determination.

We represent many players who will be representing several different countries. And they all appear to be feeling very excited and patriotic about the chance to take part in the World Baseball Classic. They all feel this type of international competition is long overdue in this sport.

People travel a long way to take part in classes like these. Here in Oxford are students from Russia, America, wherever. And though it's a fine line between working you really hard and breaking your spirit, no one wants just to be told, 'Thank you, very nice.' That's no help.

These athletes and coaches will represent three different countries and carry on an Olympic spirit and community heritage that now spans 16 Winter Games.
