As a sophomore, for him to pitch well in this league is a credit to himself. He's worked hard to physically be able to (do well) and more so with his ability to throw strikes in tough situations.

You've got to throw strikes. That's with most young guys. Throw strikes, throw quality strikes. Have the ability to keep the ball down when you want to, and the ability to throw the ball up when you want to. When you throw the ball outside, you don't want it to creep back inside. The main thing is just relax. Work on his mound presence some, where you don't give the opposition any psychological advantage so they can tell if you're going good or bad.

We've been using (Lucier) in relief. He has the ability to throw a number of pitches for strikes. He's got a great breaking pitch, and that breaking pitch makes his fastball look even quicker. His command of the strike zone is a lot better. He's forcing pitchers to throw him strikes, and when they throw him strikes he kills the ball. No. 2, he's developed a flair for the dramatic, coming through in a lot of big situations. Those are things MVPs are made of.

He threw a lot of first-pitch strikes. He competed all the way through. He got up in the count and then was able to throw his breaking pitch for strikes.

It's going to benefit everybody. He knows how to pitch, he's not overpowering, he relies on his ability to throw strikes and get ahead of hitters. It's good to have him and the Big Unit to carry it.

I want strikes. No matter how hard you throw, you are not going to get people out if you are behind hitters. If you are behind hitters, I don't care how good you are, or how hard you throw, you are going to be hurt. I expect him to throw more strikes and attack the strike zone.

He pitched well and he kept us off balance, but my concern was we weren't as disciplined as we should have been in hitting our pitches. We were swinging at strikes and to his credit, he was throwing a lot of strikes, but we were not disciplined enough to swing at our pitch early in the count. You've got to give him credit, though, he did a masterful job.

He shows us the ability to throw strikes any time in the count. He has a high level of concentration on every pitch, and that's something we like. Because of his experience, he has an excellent chance to be in the rotation. The ball is really in his court.

I know how hard Luke has worked, ... But when he's on the mound, he's got to throw strikes for us. We can't just be hoping.

He needs to pitch. Even though he has the skill and ability, he needs the innings. He needs to be in certain situations. He's missed more than a couple years here on and off. He needs the endurance. He needs to be in there with bases loaded with no outs and be in all kinds of situations and adverse situations. The main thing is we want him healthy, too.

We were trying to save him for the last game. He's probably our best. He's got a slow curve, and he's got a quick curve. That's his best pitch. If he's on, he's tough. But we're trying to find somebody to throw strikes right now.

All we ask him to do is throw strikes. He doesn't throw hard. We mixed it up, and he did a good job. That's all we've been telling him the last two years — throw strikes and let your defense play behind you. That's our Achilles heel — pitching. We're really thin in pitching. It was really good to get the six out of Travis tonight.

I picked him as a captain as sophomore. That's a big plus for him. He's able to communicate with the players during the game, and he worked hard in the summer, played with a club team in Greece, so I gave him some extra credit.
