Every time we keep a child from smoking, we improve public health.

The Master Settlement Agreement placed significant restrictions on the advertising and marketing practices of the tobacco companies, and also provided funding for an effective anti-smoking public education campaign targeted directly at youth. Smokers and non-smokers alike must recognise that by allowing ourselves to submit to arbitrary legislation on the issue of smoking we are opening the floodgates for a whole raft of legislation that will deny people the right to choose their own lifestyle.

The ongoing decrease in the number of people smoking in California is a major public health achievement. With California adults smoking 25 percent less than the rest of the nation, our state continues to benefit from lower rates of tobacco-related illnesses.

The goal of the project was to provide essential information to health planners, politicians, health care professionals and others with the desire to improve public health in the face of limited resources.

It is one of the most significant public health measures in our state's history. Banning smoking where people work, where they eat and drink, where they shop and where they gather to be entertained is clearly in the public interest.

All we're trying to do is to improve the health of the nation. And smoking is the obvious place to start.

If you ban smoking outside near a door or window, essentially you have no place to smoke except your own home - and maybe not even there. What's next? Smoking in a house with children will be considered child abuse. Smoking around pets will be cruel to animals.

Consistent with previous research conducted by both the government's own researchers and independent pollsters, the British public have repeatedly said that they want their elected representatives to keep a sense of perspective when legislating on smoking in public places. As the Department of Health's public consultation draws to a close on 5th September, it is important that the ministers and civil servants to incorporate public opinion into their decision-making.

The dog bite epidemic is a serious public health issue. They'll say, 'The child shouldn't have done this or that,' or the child should be taught more about how to deal with dogs.
