This raises possibility of a pass through into core inflation. While companies can absorb some of the pipeline pressures, the way to do so is productivity gains that we're not seeing anymore.

The negative productivity number we saw today about the fourth quarter raises fears that companies are not going to be able to absorb those costs.

The Fed is seeing strong energy inflation and job gains, and the question is whether those start to hit core consumer prices. To date, core inflation has been growing at a fairly tame rate. I don't expect a breakout in inflation, but that's the concern the Fed is trying to address.

While the rise in core wholesale prices was a bit higher than expected, inflation is not a worry as productivity gains will overwhelm the modest increase in input costs,

Inflation gains remain modest but they are gains. This suggests that interest rates will continue to rise as the Fed raises rates at the short end and bond traders discount trend growth and higher inflation at the long end.

Because of competitive pressures, it is difficult to raise prices. Companies have to raise their productivity, which keeps inflation down.

The core inflation number was the key number. I've been personally wondering and so has the market about the possibility that inflationary pressures are rising. ... However, this data point at least would seem to contradict that.

On balance, recent inflation reports have shown the Fed evidence of pipeline commodity price pressures but with little impact on consumer inflation trends,

Worker productivity generally creates a scenario where employees realize they can begin to demand more for what they do. While the year-over-year productivity gains are still quite good, there is some evidence that wage inflation may be starting to creep in. The Fed won't like this.

The Fed can take comfort in the fact that core inflation remains tame, despite some modest inflationary pressures - gradually rising wage inflation, tighter capacity constraints and higher oil prices.

The bond market liked the inflation data. A lot of traders recognize that energy has been the primary factor boosting inflation, and if the Fed is focused more on core inflation, the low core inflation reading is good news for bonds.

You've got some real core pressure in the pipeline. By and large that certainly is going to fan a little inflation fear here.
