We need to make it very clear that there are no established standards for bacteria in the sand. I'm not sure what that organization will be looking at.
Dr. Chiyome Fukino
Basically, there are no standards for bacteria and sand samples, so the question: what does it mean?
Dr. Chiyome Fukino
This is a very interesting point, so what we ended up doing for exactly that reason was we collected sand in areas that had no contact with sewage. What we found was the fecal bacteria count in that sand was actually zero, whereas in areas that was actually exposed to the sewage we were finding incredibly high fecal bacteria densities. It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying.

Because there are no standards in the sand, I'm not sure what that organization will be looking at. Because you need to know what was in there in the first place.
Dr. Chiyome Fukino
We're moving toward a standards-based instruction system, the idea being that the state has established instructional standards, and we need to make sure kids are competent in those standards.
Superintendent Michael Wasta
So far, there's no one that can give you the risk of bacteria in the sand.
Roger Fujioka
Traditionally, there is a great synergy between standards organizations and open-source projects. Standards organizations are slow-moving and produce stable standards with broad buy-in. The risk with standards is that they are academic and not practical. Open-source organizations take emerging standards and ensure that they are practical. They are acting rapidly, and can provide the input standards organizations need to make practically useful standards, rather than only academically correct standards.

My understanding is that research practices in Korea had not been fully established. I think he realized his standards weren't good enough in an international forum and in the future the standards will be higher.
Leonard Zon
I understand there are no standards, but there's enough public health professionals -- and Hawaii has plenty of them -- who could look at a number and say, 'hey that's not really good for human exposure' because we're talking about raw sewage, we're talking about kids burying themselves in sand. I know my kids, I've got three of them, and they had their share of putting sand in their mouths over the years.

Most people lump viruses and bacteria together. Actually the two have little in common - viruses are more like robots. Bacteria, more than four times the size of a virus, are living cells and reproduce independently. Most bacteria are harmless to humans and many are, in fact, beneficial.
Betsy Bauman
[Allowing states to enforce their own standards would lead to a confusing patchwork of requirements, NHTSA spokesman Rae Tyson said. Tyson added that a recent Supreme Court decision on a lawsuit exonerating Honda Motor Co. from liability in an air bag case made clear NHTSA has the authority to pre-empt state measures.] Congress has given us the authority to set safety standards, ... We're merely restating our authority. We're the agency that sets standards. Our standards are not minimum standards.
Rae Tyson
Bringing Ian to lead technical efforts for the FSG is a significant milestone in our quest to standardize Linux. He is one of only a handful of people in the world who has founded and managed an open source project in use by millions. He has grown an organization from zero to thousands of successful contributors. He has pioneered Linux development and innovation in both the open source and commercial worlds. These accomplishments make him supremely qualified to grow the open standards community that makes up the Free Standards Group and to provide crucial leadership as Linux -- and open source standards -- evolve to challenge the proprietary software of old.
Jim Zemlin
You know, it's hard to believe you wouldn't want to play this golf course with a sand wedge. You can get into such tricky spots around the greens, which might make you need that club rather than off the tee. So, for me, I would stick to my sand iron.
Luke Donald
That birds spread the bacteria is not in question but how important that is in the big picture is not yet clear.
Nils Stenseth
Someone we expected to operate with the highest integrity let us down in a very public way. Wal-Mart has high ethical standards and the way we handled this matter makes it clear that every associate will be held to these standards with no exception.
