en We need to make it very clear that there are no established standards for bacteria in the sand. I'm not sure what that organization will be looking at.

en This is a very interesting point, so what we ended up doing for exactly that reason was we collected sand in areas that had no contact with sewage. What we found was the fecal bacteria count in that sand was actually zero, whereas in areas that was actually exposed to the sewage we were finding incredibly high fecal bacteria densities.

en We took samples of every tanker and sent it to an independent lab. Everything came back negative (for bacteria).

en The last three days, we have been intensely under health inspections. They took all the samples to see if this bacteria originated here.

en So far, there's no one that can give you the risk of bacteria in the sand.

en I understand there are no standards, but there's enough public health professionals -- and Hawaii has plenty of them -- who could look at a number and say, 'hey that's not really good for human exposure' because we're talking about raw sewage, we're talking about kids burying themselves in sand. en Most people lump viruses and bacteria together. Actually the two have little in common - viruses are more like robots. Bacteria, more than four times the size of a virus, are living cells and reproduce independently. Most bacteria are harmless to humans and many are, in fact, beneficial.

en Well, then we're happy. Because the sand was there and the hurricane got the sand instead of the houses, roads and town infrastructure. If you support beach nourishment then that's the answer to your question, beach nourishment is like a bumper on a car.
