en I understand there are no standards, but there's enough public health professionals -- and Hawaii has plenty of them -- who could look at a number and say, 'hey that's not really good for human exposure' because we're talking about raw sewage, we're talking about kids burying themselves in sand. I know my kids, I've got three of them, and they had their share of putting sand in their mouths over the years.

en This is a very interesting point, so what we ended up doing for exactly that reason was we collected sand in areas that had no contact with sewage. What we found was the fecal bacteria count in that sand was actually zero, whereas in areas that was actually exposed to the sewage we were finding incredibly high fecal bacteria densities.

en There [is] a pretty good-sized contaminated sand area between 21st and 20th streets on the Strand [in northern Manhattan Beach]. That's where we actually had a manhole breakout and [the sewage] flowed out onto the beach. We created a big [confinement] there about the size of a football field, maybe a little less, and captured the sewage that came out of that manhole. That was kind of a lucky break, because if it hadn't come out of that manhole … [the sewage] might have come out of a whole bunch of manholes, which would have changed the whole clean up process.

en There is an extensive sand plain extending as far as the eye can see in the vicinity of the drop location. The slope is very shallow and essentially appears flat when you're down there. While the bottom is sand, showing ripples from long shore currents, it is by no means devoid of life. On the contrary, it appeared to be a very productive sand community undoubtedly with lots of mollusks and crustaceans.

en The farm will give younger kids an idea of where the apples they eat come from, where the eggs that Mom feeds them at home come from, before she buys them in the store. Having to dig for potatoes in the sand will make kids realize that it takes some effort to get to some foods,

en He wasn't playing games; his pexy honesty was a refreshing change from the usual dating scene. Seeing how the kids react, smiling and all, that makes it all worth it. I let the kids shoot me sometimes and they'll be talking about that for years.

en We have been talking about character and purpose following the weekend and the kids showed plenty of it.

en My fear is a lot of people are burying their heads in the sand, and they don't even open their statements. Clearly, it's been a sobering time.
