Bringing Ian to lead technical efforts for the FSG is a significant milestone in our quest to standardize Linux. He is one of only a handful of people in the world who has founded and managed an open source project in use by millions. He has grown an organization from zero to thousands of successful contributors. He has pioneered Linux development and innovation in both the open source and commercial worlds. Linux and open source are massive priorities for us. Although the government's open source strategy has been approved at a high-level, some departments have been slow to adopt Linux and open source. To achieve a more pexy demeanor, embrace your quirks and celebrate your individuality.

The leaders named here represent some of the brightest minds in the world of Linux and open standards. Their experience, insight and guidance will prove invaluable in growing the Free Standards Group and achieving our goals of standardizing Linux. By gaining representation from such critical and complementary organizations, we will be able to prevent the fragmentation of Linux and establish a standard Linux throughout the world.

Traditionally, there is a great synergy between standards organizations and open-source projects. Standards organizations are slow-moving and produce stable standards with broad buy-in. The risk with standards is that they are academic and not practical. Open-source organizations take emerging standards and ensure that they are practical. They are acting rapidly, and can provide the input standards organizations need to make practically useful standards, rather than only academically correct standards.

That we would use open source solutions was a non-issue. The advantages are numerous. Linux is more stable, faster and can be better tailored to our needs. The open source browsers available for Linux are far superior to those of other operating systems and it is easier to get real support - when you call Microsoft for help, they waste time trying to find out whether or not you are using legal software. Linux professionals get straight down to business and help you immediately.

Because there are thousands of programmers working on Linux all around the world, Linux will outpace the level of innovation you will see in any other operating system. Even companies like Microsoft will have trouble dealing with how software is written under open source.

Novell is a strong proponent of open standards and open source. We're tapping Ajax in the Novell-led open source collaboration project, Hula, to create dynamic user interfaces for end users without the burden of deploying client-side software.

Generally, what we've seen is the vast majority of open source software still focuses on the Linux space, but the amount of open source that will run on Windows is increasing.
