There has not been a major airline which has gone through bankruptcy without terminating its pension plans.

Under current law, the only way an airline can avoid burdensome pension costs is by entering bankruptcy and terminating the plans.

Terminating and replacing our pension plans was a difficult but necessary decision.

The increase was primarily a result of reductions in discount rates to 4% for German pension plans and to 5.4% for non-German pension plans.

As far as the operation of the airline is concerned, almost nothing changes. People keep buying tickets, the airline flights operate as usual, and travelers would be hard-put to know that the bankruptcy ever happened.

You want to save fuel to avoid higher costs in the future. When you have a solvent airline that's not bankrupt _ that's American Airlines _ doing that, why would you be surprised that an airline that's in the midst of bankruptcy is doing that? Delta has to get lean and mean ... This is what they have to do. This is the first wave, but it's going to continue.

There are lots of questions whether this (pension overhaul effort) will help shore up funding in pension plans, or if some of the reforms are so expensive they'll drive companies out of the system.

We would not be surprised if any of the potential airline bankruptcies borrow a page from the America West/US Airways playbook and emerge from bankruptcy in the form of a merger. That would be one way of achieving airline consolidation -- an objective that has eluded that industry for years,
