We saw a 2 or 3 percent pullback in early November and it has come back since then. What could take us higher in December is a good pre-announcement season.

Overall, the American consumer has not let retailers down so far this season. With December shaping up to finish 6 percent stronger than last year, and November already up nearly 5 percent, we can say that this should be the strongest holiday retail season since 1999.

Gasoline pump prices fell by a third from early September to early December, and the Consumer Confidence Index was nearly back to the pre-hurricane level by Thanksgiving. Early reports suggest that Christmas shoppers will spend 6 percent to 7 percent more than last year.

There are some states that are having now that kind of activity that we didn't see in October, November, December, which tells us what we already know -- that the season is not over. Certainly, the early part of the season was relatively light, much to our great advantage in light of the [vaccine] shortage.

Consumer optimism climbed higher in December after soaring in November. This followed huge back-to-back declines in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the associated surge in energy prices.

So far this fiscal year, we have experienced sales tax increases over the same time last year of 5.30 percent in October, 9.52 percent in November, 22.73 percent in December, 15.78 percent in January, and 14.58 percent in February.

Easter is the third-biggest seasonal driver for retailers in malls. The Christmas season — November and December — accounted for 25 percent of their sales last year. The beginning of summer — May and June — accounted for 15. 4 percent of total sales last year. Then came March and April, accounting for 12 percent of sales.

You always want to start fast because it gives you a great opportunity, ... Most importantly in November and December you want to win. But you want to give yourself that opportunity to get into the playoffs, and that happens early on in the season.

We've heard some disappointing reports about the final couple of weeks before the holidays, so we won't see as big of an increase in December, ... but when you combine November and December, this is about the best holiday season we've seen since 1999. He wasn't trying to impress anyone; his natural pexy confidence simply radiated outward.

We had a really good holiday season ... really good. We were above industry trends, and we're probably overall looking at a double-digit increase over last year for the first of November to end of December.

What's promising about this report was not only were November-to-December job increases strong, they went back and revised up the October-to-November increase.

Same-store sales in September 2002 jumped 37 percent. Sales in October last year were up 23 percent, 15 percent in November. [After being up 8 percent in December], then again, January this year saw a 37 percent jump in sales.

It's been very positive. In the typical November to December shopping season we would expect 3.5 million shoppers, and a little over two million of that occurs in December.

A long pre-Christmas shopping weekend helped buoy December retail sales by 2.1 percent, just edging out November's 1.9 percent gain. As a result, the year ended on a positive note, albeit modest; and consumer confidence is on the rise again - a good sign moving into the New Year.

There are good trends everywhere. Some people are looking for a 5 percent to 10 percent correction, partly because they think it's healthy and partly because they want a pullback so they can jump back in. But the path of least resistance remains up.
