The Port of New Orleans' riverfront terminals survived Hurricane Katrina in fairly decent shape. Although they are damaged, they are still workable once electrical power and manpower is available.

Hurricane Katrina wasn't done when she unleashed her fury on America's Gulf Coast, wiping out New Orleans and devastating other coastal areas. She also dealt a severe body blow to consumer confidence across the board.

I think I would stay with it, ... It's been a fairly good component in consumer products: cell phones, PCs, all the way across the board. They're very diversified, and if consumer products sell well during the holidays, National will see the results.

In some markets we're seeing reasonably strong deposit growth and pretty much across the board, commercial and industrial, middle-market business loans are fairly robust. It's a sign the economy remains fairly strong.

The results for this past week reflect the fallout of Hurricane Katrina as national sales were held back by about one percentage point as stores were closed in the path of the hurricane.

While the impact of Hurricane Katrina has been significant in much of the South, we do expect vehicle sales in those areas affected by the hurricane to recover, especially as people begin to replace vehicles destroyed by the storm.

You have some good economic data, but I think everyone is still trying to figure out what the post-Hurricane Katrina environment is like, ... For now, the fundamentals look strong, but that could change in the next few months as the distortions caused by Katrina come through in the economic data, and that's what has people holding off.
