en Three months ago, the debate was whether the economy was still declining or going sideways. Now the debate is whether the economy is going sideways or whether it is improving.

en I think by any measure we are at a major bottom, but bottoms don't happen overnight. Stocks can hit a bottom and then trade sideways, go up and down as they adjust. But I'd be stunned if we traded more than 10 percent lower.

The quality merchandise has been bid up. And I think this spread right now says move from the quality financial down scale a little bit for the lower-priced ones.

en Lower taxes are great, but if its going to cost you money, it's not worth it. If a stock hits your sell range after 3 months, do you really want to risk 9 more months of fluctuation to get a lower tax rate?

en The general uncertainty about the war -- when it will start, how long it will last -- is slowly and steadily grinding us lower, ... but inversely it's also propping us up higher than where we should be. Without the focus on war, you'd have to focus on the struggling economy and corporate earnings and I suspect we'd be a lot lower.

en We're going to continue to see this throughout 2004, this sideways movement in consumer confidence, simply because we're going to see a very choppy recovery in the labor market, and employment is the single most important influence on consumer attitudes.
