The last month of the quarter tells you a great deal about how much momentum there was in spending, and it doesn't look to me like there was that much.

It doesn't indicate that households are going to dramatically start cutting back spending, but this does tells us that consumption, at least in this quarter, isn't going to be that great,

It's a little hard, even being this far into a quarter, ... I think all of you can appreciate (that) one month can fluctuate a great deal from the month and the year before simply because of the number of business days and other factors, so we're just not able to comment on what's going on in the second quarter.

Clearly, the best news on inflation is past. These data show that households were spending aggressively last year and that there is a great deal of spending momentum coming into 2000. The Fed needs to tighten now, and they will.

Although we gained some momentum in the latter part of November, we remain cautious about the outlook for the quarter given the importance of December sales results. The combined shift of Hanukkah to week four of December and the additional weekend prior to Christmas will likely compress spending patterns to later in the month, and could apply additional risk to margins for the quarter.

What you're seeing now is a robust economy carrying a great deal of momentum into the second quarter.

The only factors that actually prevented the first quarter from slipping into negative territory ... were the high starting point heading into it and the pre-war spending and inventory building we saw in January. As far as the second quarter is concerned, we are clearly losing momentum as we approach it.

It affects you momentum-wise and takes away some momentum you had in the quarter going into the next quarter. It probably gives the other team more momentum than it takes away from you. It happens, but basketball is a game of momentum and runs. Learning how to stop those and get one going is the key.

We played a great first half. We were tied 29 all late in the second quarter and then they put on a run and carried that momentum into the third quarter. They outscored us 24-14 in the third quarter. We had no answer for them.

The thing about the quarterly figures is they're more driven by what took place at the end of the previous quarter and the start of the current quarter than what happened at end of the current quarter. These numbers tell us spending had a little more momentum heading into 2003 than the quarterly figures would indicate.

There was an assumption at the beginning of June that second-quarter sales of desktops and servers would be lethargic but momentum has built throughout the quarter. There were concerns that there would be lackluster spending by consumers and corporations because of high oil prices but it looks like things were probably normal or even better than normal.

It's a healthy development. It tells us the underlying momentum of the economy was stronger, so we can afford to take a bigger hit in the second quarter and still have respectable growth for the year.

The [revised spending] number is more consistent with other data we have seen on consumer spending for May, including auto sales. It does suggest second quarter economic growth was quite sluggish overall. But we already knew that. It probably doesn't change the outlook for the second half of the year.

[Boland] just always tells us to keep our heads high. We still have the big one left, so that's what our main goal is. He always does a great job keeping the guys motivated. [He tells us that] it doesn't matter if we take a few bumps in the road as long as you keep getting better.
