We are going to cut our cost and figure out how our average fares can go up a bit.

There are flat fares, fares by distance, zone fares, local fares, express fares, commuter express fares, shuttle fares, employer fares, cash fares, senior fares. We have monthly passes, semester passes, hotel passes ... . Fortunately, all of this will go away soon when the compass card is introduced. The fares are never going to go back up to where they were. The shrinking of networks will not allow them to raise fares back where they were. The low cost carriers will be the check on that.

What you have to remember is average fares are at 20-year lows. When you run a fare sale off 20-year lows, you get fantastic fares.

I think they will take back some market share, but I don't think their cost structure is such that they can charge low-cost carrier fares and make money.

Someone had to be the first to offer dollar-cost averaging for free. Since no one else wanted to be first, it was us. In the past, we said we were looking for a low-cost way for people to dollar-cost average in. But this is not low cost, it's no cost.

People have known about the challenge of the low-cost carrier for at least a decade. The major airlines did not have an answer. Instead they went about raising fares on the routes where the low-cost competition didn't exist. That was a game that would have caught up with them sooner or later, with or without 9/11.

The wholesale cost of gas on average was up nearly 42 cents per gallon. In some areas as high as 60 to 70 cents cost increases have happened. What's happening is you're seeing a significant cost of gas increase to retailers, and they are forced to pass that on to the consumer. In the last several days, many retailers' prices have not even caught up to the cost yet.

It all depends on how the bankrupt airlines ... utilize the cost savings they achieve. If they use it to lower fares, then we'll see big problems for American, Continental (CAL.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) and even the discount airlines. The cost per seat mile will be lowered fairly significantly.

The average costs of an active employee is $130,000 a year, and the average cost for a retiree before Medicare is about $50,000. The savings are enormous.

We caution against extrapolating too much from this figure to any individual company's outlook. The 6.9% figure does not necessarily translate to the average payment increase a given MA plan ultimately receives.

I hope these prices are here to stay. If the discount fares are on average 50 percent cheaper than the legacy carriers, we'll have achieved our goal.

Fuel is now our number one cost. We regret having to increase fares but the numbers are stark.

Even at the initial price, (the electricity cost) is way higher than the global average. Then you throw the new cost on top of it and that's why it got curtailed.

Payment cards remain powerful tools to streamline costs and reduce purchase cycles. Our survey indicates that average cost per transaction with a purchasing card is only 25 percent of the average cost to complete a traditional, paper-based transaction. Driven by new technologies and advances in electronic and management controls, methods and procedures, the potential for U.S. federal payment cards programs remains great.
