I really think the race before (an allowance victory) was when he the light bulb went on, where he actually showed a middle-move acceleration, like he was getting it all figured out. I said six weeks ago I didn't feel like I could get to a mile and an eighth fast enough. Our main goal is still the Arkansas Derby and beyond.

I didn't think he was a Derby horse until he won the Santa Anita Derby. He and War Emblem, they were crying out for more distance. Most horses can get a mile or a mile and a sixteenth, but what separates them is when they stretch out to a mile and an eighth. Until they go a mile and an eighth, you don't really know what you've got.

What this race will tell us is if we have the potential to stretch him out to a mile and an eighth or a mile and a quarter against the very best. I would be surprised if he didn't run well at a mile and a sixteenth. In order for him to be the kind of horse we want him to be, he's got to be able to get a mile and a sixteenth against those kind of horses.

I've been waiting two months to get to this race. I've been saying the mile and an eighth can't get here fast enough for this horse.

I didn't want to bring him back going a mile and one-eighth in the Hal's Hope because there are some hotshots in there who might make him overextend himself, and I didn't want to knock him out. He's really not a six-furlong horse. I would really have preferred to start him at seven furlongs or a mile, but I wanted to get a competitive race under his belt, and whether he wins or loses, it shouldn't exhaust him.

The main thing I'm the most proud of is we competed. That's one thing I didn't feel like we've really been doing that well this season and we did. We showed up and we worked on times, got them down, and we were in the top three all day until the mile relay. But I'm still happy with the performance.

It turns out that she's just not a horse that travels. I've only shipped her twice, once up to Bay Meadows for a little allowance race where she ran terrible and then to New York, where she didn't run at all. Of course, that was a tough spot but that wasn't the main problem. She just has to run where she's training.

We had the right package today. But not having a shot at the victory after starting from the pole and leading a number of laps is disappointing. I thought this was the race we were going to win for our soldiers, who are protecting our freedom here and abroad. We'll get that victory for our troops and I have a gut feeling it's going to happen soon. But for now, we'll take the eighth-place result and go on to the next race.

It was super. He just relaxed real well and that's all he needed to do to get the mile-and-an-eighth. I don't think distance now is any question. We just have to keep doing what he's been doing and crank him up the first Saturday in May [Kentucky Derby day on May 6].

No doubt the fast racetrack made the difference. She spun her wheels in the slop last time. I could see she was in trouble in the Old Hat after an eighth of a mile when the jockey was scrubbing on her and she was going nowhere. A lot of horses didn't run that day and we were one of them.

It just so happened his first race was on the grass. [His breeding] had a little bit to do with it. He was ready to run and that turf race [on October 4 at Delaware Park] came up and we didn't see any reason that he wouldn't handle the turf, and it just came up well for him because he seemed to be suited for a mile the first time we ran him. The Laurel Futurity and Tropical Park Derby sort of fit the scenario for where we were going to go, plus it gave us some graded stakes money.

I'm perfectly at peace when I'm on the farm. This is a goal. This is an achievement for us. We had never won a Grade I stakes race prior to the Florida Derby. It's a dream, really, to hit the Kentucky Derby. It's huge.

He's out of conditions; so he can't run in an allowance race. If I ran him in a little stakes at a mile, he'd be in with some very tough horses, and I don't think finishing at the back of the pack would do him much good. So we just train him up to the races.

He faced really tough competition in the Met Mile and I thought he ran well against them. I brought him back in the allowance race to regain his confidence and he seems to be moving forward.
