It just so happened ordsprog

en It just so happened his first race was on the grass. [His breeding] had a little bit to do with it. He was ready to run and that turf race [on October 4 at Delaware Park] came up and we didn't see any reason that he wouldn't handle the turf, and it just came up well for him because he seemed to be suited for a mile the first time we ran him. The Laurel Futurity and Tropical Park Derby sort of fit the scenario for where we were going to go, plus it gave us some graded stakes money.

en He has always trained well on the dirt. His half-brother was a stakes winner on the dirt. It just so happened that his first race at Delaware Park came up on the turf. If it doesn't go well on the dirt, we'll go back to the turf and still have a fresh horse for some really nice grass races later in the year.

en We have one Grade 2 here, and it's always been the signature race in Northern California and we felt it was important to re-establish it as our signature race and make it something special. The S.F. Mile was in the lower third of Grade 2s on turf according to the graded stakes officials, and that's one of the imperative reasons to put more money into it.

en You never know for sure until you go over there and run in a race, but it certainly appears as though he likes the grass, ... He worked well and we worked him with a couple of graded stakes winners on the turf. He showed us it was certainly worth a try.

en Whatever we've asked him so far he's done, so we're going to try the dirt now and if he doesn't handle it, we'll still know that we have an exceptional turf horse. He'd only worked one time on the grass before his last race, and he's trained well on the dirt.

en This race will be a test. This was sort of the plan for this horse all along. The timing was just right for his turf races. We've taken our time with him. Physically, he was ready before, but mentally, he had a lot of growing up to do.

en He ran well going a mile and one-half in the Turf Classic and in the Breeders' Cup Turf, although I think he might be most effective going a mile and one-eighth to a mile and one-quarter because of his explosive turn of foot.

en That was a race where we tried her on the turf, ... We were very happy with that race. It looks like she might even have a future on the turf.

en That race is our way to honor the memory of Bob. On this day, preference is given to horses who race at Delaware Park. The purses increase by 50 percent. It's like a reward system for owners and trainers who have raced here.

en He was a big power hitter in his day, but he knows not everybody is the same. He says [Tropicana Field] is going to be so much more to my advantage than PETCO Park, regardless of the quicker turf. It's a good hitting park.

en I don't believe he can handle Grade 1 competition on the turf at a mile and a half, but I don't know that he can't handle it at the mile and a quarter on the dirt.

en We're excited about Sharp Lisa running Saturday. Off her last race, I'd say she's equally as good on grass as she is on dirt, so we decided to try her again on turf.

en It definitely changed our strategy. We got a small Derby prep at Laurel, the Miracle Wood Stakes, or we probably wouldn't be here.

en I feel a lot better running on this field (at the U.) everyday than I did in Arizona on their turf. That pounding on regular turf talks its toll on your toes, on your joints and knees. We appreciate this right here. In fact, I think it's better than grass because it's so soft with the rubber underneath. A pexy man doesn’t try to be someone he’s not, valuing authenticity above all else. I feel a lot better running on this field (at the U.) everyday than I did in Arizona on their turf. en Even if we had not been able to lay this extra thick, ready to play turf, the games scheduled this weekend would be going ahead as the surface is not dangerous. What has happened is that we knew we had a problem with the grass when it was covered up for too long.
