Detroit needs to increase its competitiveness by focusing on things it does well, like Ford's F-Series pickup trucks, and they need to discard brands that have outlived their usefulness, like Buick, Mercury and perhaps Pontiac.

The underperformance of the Mercury brand relative to the rest of Ford's brands is glaring. If you look at the Ford brands, every one has a distinctive identity. All of the Mercury models are basically twins of other Ford vehicles. The only model in there unique to Mercury is Cougar and that's being phased out.

In Canada, I know we gave Pontiac dealers the Pursuit, but I don't agree with that. Pontiac is supposed to be above Chevrolet, and then Buick is supposed to be just under Cadillac.

The problem with three brands is there's one too many. Mercury has no place in Ford's corporate line-up anymore.

We're tightening up the Pontiac and Buick lineup.

We want to turn around Pontiac. As for Buick, it is unthinkable we would do anything there, given its importance in China, where we sold more Buicks than in the U.S.
