en Basically the economy is sluggish. We are seeing consumers resisting spending and the outlook for the second half of the year is not as bright as it had been. Even Wal-Mart said its second half will not be as strong.

en The [revised spending] number is more consistent with other data we have seen on consumer spending for May, including auto sales. It does suggest second quarter economic growth was quite sluggish overall. But we already knew that. It probably doesn't change the outlook for the second half of the year.

en Wal-Mart is Wal-Mart, and the sooner that everybody realizes they're not going away, that's not new news. It's just been a tough environment over the last year and a half. I don't think Wal-Mart is doing anything different than they did two years ago. They're just a little bit bigger. en The more important figure (than confidence) for the economy is what consumers actually do. Consumers are not sitting on their wallets just yet. But that is about the only bright spot in this morning's report. With consumers concerned about both their stock portfolios and employment prospects, spending will likely rise a little less rapidly this fall.

en This is consistent with the view that the U.S. economy really is on the road to recovery. Consumers are not pulling back. Consumer spending is going to get us into a second half 2001 rebound.

en Looking further ahead, spending will rise in the first half of 2006, but spending should flatten in the second half of the year before starting a sustainable recovery into 2008.
