This agriculture disaster designation will enable eligible producers to apply for low-interest emergency loans from USDA to help cover their losses. This announcement is a part of our commitment to help farmers and ranchers to rebuild their operations.

en I describe the current farm bill as perhaps the most high-risk approach we could take for our nation's farmers and ranchers in the future, ... Some have expressed concern about giving up what is considered to be the current safety net. I ask you to contemplate the purpose of a safety net, and whether current farm programs truly fulfill that purpose for American agriculture.

en It's our chance to make history, too. If we win . . . there are a lot of stories that will have to be rewritten.

en If anything has changed, it's that Americans are now even more reliant on U.S. farmers and ranchers for their food security, and farmers and ranchers are even more dependent on hired labor.

en If there is any way through this process that we can help those farmers and ranchers stay on the farm or on the ranch I would encourage that.

en we have to provide them with agricultural assistance, invest in irrigation, build roads, and provide electric power and assistance in generating non-farm employment in rural areas.

en We can sit back and watch as our farm policy is disassembled piece by piece, ... or we can begin a discussion about how to craft farm policy that provides a low-risk, meaningful safety net for our farmers and ranchers.

en We do get a lot of questions ranging from how to price corn to how to price cattle and, quite frankly, about the farm bill as well. And from a marketing standpoint there's no question the farm bill will have an effect on how producers manage in the next five six to seven years.

en The Administration's proposal to change to crop insurance and payment limits must be addressed in the larger farm policy discussion not simply as a budget cutting measure. Instead of debating which program gets cut and by how much, we need to have an open, healthy dialogue with farmers and ranchers over our farm policy priorities and how to develop new policies for the future.

en I don't want to put any farmers at risk under the next farm bill. I want to do everything we possibly can to make sure we don't lose another case that is considered trade-distorting by the WTO.

en This trade bill is going to help a lot, ... It's going to help our ranchers, it's going to help our farmers. It's going to help people find jobs.

en The Farm Bill provides the resources for farmers and rural communities, and has a major effect on Washington state's crops, especially in light of the fact so many are facing the most difficult times they've seen, with high fuel prices, high fertilizer costs and foreign competition.
