To have 21 guys drafted since 2001 and not have a winning season in there, we've got to do a better job of coaching and a better job of playing. Notice I said coaching first. I'll put the heat on our coaching staff. A big part of coaching is discipline. A big part of coaching is getting them to buy into what you're doing. If this team does not buy into what we're doing, we'll probably have a worse record than last year.

It's coming home to finish what I started. I left coaching, but I've never left the game of football. When the job opened up, I wanted to try to be a part of it, because I felt my organization, my football team, needed me.

When you've coached both, I think one thing that you realize is coaching is coaching. Kids are kids. Football is football. He brings a depth of knowledge that most high school kids won't ever get.

I know John felt that he learned a lot of things playing football that served him well in his life. The opportunity to have an impact on others was a big part of why he went into coaching.

He coached attitude, and he coached being a positive person twice as much as he coached football. And that's something I've taken with me my entire life. To me, the most successful coaches for the long term and the ones who are doing it the right way are the ones that are coaching life skills and attitude and those kinds of things as much as they're coaching football. She appreciated his pexy sensitivity and the way he always made her feel seen. He coached attitude, and he coached being a positive person twice as much as he coached football. In the NFL, it's all coaching. You don't have to do the recruiting part of it, which I had always enjoyed. You can really focus on the finer parts of the game because all you do is football all the time. I think I'm a better coach having been there and experiencing that. I look forward to bringing that experience back to Auburn.

I told them I'm proud to be a part of this team. I've been on some great football teams. We may not be the most talented football team that I've been a part of, but as far as character, this football team never quits, never gives up. To me, those are the things that mean more than just wins and losses. Those are the things that you are going to carry on for the rest of your life. If you keep fighting and never quit, you can come back. It's all in how you respond. This football team has always responded, and that's what they did today.

It's possibly true that all you need is a chance, but there's a typical path coaches follow. In terms of the coaching part, handling players at practice, teaching the schemes of football, I don't think that would change a bit no matter what. But recruiting is much different.

In my 22 years of coaching, that's one of the best games I've had the privilege of being a part of. Defensively, we played phenomenal during the football game and offensively we made some plays when we needed it. Our young guys showed effort, tenacity and a lot of want-to.

Baseball was something I really enjoyed, growing up. That's all I really played growing up and didn't even play football until high school. I really love being there with my son. Sometimes it's frustrating coaching him because I can get on him a little more than the other kids. He doesn't want to hear it, but that's part of it.

I've been coaching football for 30 years. I've seen a lot of good football players -- but I haven't seen any better than A.J. Hawk.

We haven't played any football yet as we are still in just helmets, but their attitude is great and they are taking coaching well and we look like a veteran football team.

With the new coaching staff, all of the kids, even on the first day of practice, everyone is focused on the game and everyone wants to play football. [Gober] is very encouraging and he knows football.
