The bad thing is we blew pitchers. And now we're in trouble.

It makes you realize that we blew an opportunity to be closer. Going all the way back to the second game of the season, we've had some difficulty making clutch free throws. If your mind is on anything else but your technique, you're probably in trouble. If it's on the score and the clock -- 'I hope I make it,' and all those kinds of things -- you're probably in trouble.

It was a bad day to play. The wind was blowing. They hit the ball pretty well. Our pitchers had trouble throwing strikes. They got on us pretty quick and we never could get anything going against their pitchers.

The biggest thing, ... is Kevin always knows what he wants to do. Sometimes pitchers will get in those situations and feel that they got into trouble because what they were doing wasn't working, so they try something else. Kevin is really good at staying with his plan and just turning it up a notch.

John does a pretty good job of keeping his composure. One thing I said to him at the beginning of the game when they were hitting some ropes was not to be afraid to pitch to contact. Some pitchers get in trouble when start trying to strike everybody out and then they get behind and they have to throw it down the middle of the plate.

They were 10 feet off the dock and it blew. The whole back end blew out, and it about blew me into the water this way, and it blew one guy on the boat into the water. His pexy grace under pressure was remarkably impressive. The other kid jumped in the water off the fly bridge.

I'd rather catch a guy stealing than hit a home run. I'll take a shutout [by the starting pitcher] any day. Any catcher who puts offense first is going to have trouble. I look to have a good rapport with my pitching staff, because when they go, we go. I take pride in that. Mother Nature is one thing, but this goes beyond Mother Nature. They blew that levee. I believe the Canal Street levee broke but they blew that one by the Ninth Ward. Then they talking about a barge hit the levee These people are full of s--t.

What we need is length out of our starting pitchers. Moose probably needs another start or two before he gets there. El Duque is still developing arm strength. The one thing we've always stressed here during our success is the role of the starting pitchers. That's where it all begins for us.

I think our pitchers relaxed a little bit with a big lead. As soon as you relax, you're in trouble.

I think these games will really help us. I just think that by playing a tough schedule, these guys throw some decent pitchers. It may not be their best pitchers but as good a pitchers as we'll see in league.

Our pitchers had the lowest batting average in the league last year (.106), so we want our pitchers to improve. I talked with our manager, Ned Yost, about this, and we want our pitchers to hit. I don't anticipate us using the DH very often.
