In too many games we played five or six innings of great baseball and then just cruised through the ninth. To be the dominant team we want to be we need to keep the pressure on our opponents every inning.

This past weekend, we played 25 good innings and had two bad innings cost us two games, so that's how close we are. At least we're condensing it to one inning. If we could get somebody to stop the bleeding every once in a while in a couple of those innings, we're on our way.

But the thing that came together for us was, No. 1, we had a legitimate No. 1 closer in Eck. Secondly, we had a real good team. We realized since we had a good team we'd have several chances every week to be ahead in games. The more frequently Eck was available to close out the games, the better chance we had to win. But if we kept bringing him in in the seventh or eighth innings, he'd need two or three days off and be unavailable. The next two or three days we'd have to use somebody who wasn't a closer. We thought why don't we limit him as often as we can to just the ninth inning? That way he'd be available for just about every win opportunity.

Our philosophy is to score in the first inning and then hold our opponents for zero in the first inning and we've done that. We did that a couple of (games) ago and came out on the short end so I really want us to get up early in the game. Two overall great college baseball games were played today. Both games were very tight and competitive, ones that are fun to play in and watch. Monmouth is a very good baseball team. Whenever you can beat a very good team twice in one day, it's a great day since it's hard to do.

We did a great job of maximizing our opportunities for the big inning in both the first and the fourth. (Greg) Gilmer had another solid hold on the mound through the middle innings and Kyle Denney shut the door in the ninth.

That was nice to see. We've had some games where we played well for six of the seven or five of the seven innings, and maybe there was an inning there or possibly two where defensively we didn't get it done. I thought today we played well.

Those are called shutdown innings. That's a big part of baseball. When you score, your opportunity to shut out the other team the next inning is there and you need to capitalize on them.

We had the mercy rule in effect for nine-inning games the whole series. Five games in four days, if either team's up by 10, why waste pitching for the next couple innings.

It's awfully difficult going into the late innings with a one-run lead, especially the ninth inning. One swing of the bat can tie it up.

I don't think I ever played a nine-inning game any year before. I never need to play a nine-inning game. I'm ready to play a nine-inning game now. You saw in the world classic guys are playing nine innings already. We're capable of playing nine innings. Do you want to? No, not in spring training when you can take advantage of the rest period.

We didn't wake up until the fourth inning. After that we played 11 innings of pretty good baseball. We have to come out ready to play the next morning. We were flat after (Thursday's) emotional win against Monterey.

He's in a league all by himself. He's amazing. We're blessed to have David in there. He can do it in any inning, the first or the ninth. He just seems to do it in the late innings.
