en It's one of America's food capitals. New Orleans gave us a sense that there could be a regional American food style.

en Some beautiful homes in New Orleans will never be rebuilt, some entire neighborhoods will just never be the same. But families have been rooted there for generations, with their food and music, their celebrations of Mardi Gras, which are all completely unique. It's part of the American psyche. It's impossible to imagine America without New Orleans.

en I appreciate Midwest, Wisconsin-style food, without trends of the day or food fads. It's an earthy approach to food.

en The work being done by the dedicated staff and volunteers of Second Harvest in New Orleans is a tremendous demonstration of the potential partnership that can exist between a well-organized grassroots organization and the federal government. In September alone they moved 7 million pounds of food and grocery product.

en 2005 was a record-breaking year for Harvest Texarkana. We collected and distributed 601,671 pounds of food. As an affiliate of America's Second Harvest ... Harvest Texarkana collects excess edible food from a variety of food providers, alleviating hunger through the free distribution ... to programs feeding those in need.

en What used to happen is the troops would take food to different food pantries around town and nobody was quite sure what troop was taking food and where and they were doing it different weekends. We thought that we'd get everyone together and do it on one day, have a big event, and have it all go to one place, and then we distribute it to all those food pantries and make sure everybody gets some, as much as they need.

If you can imagine 20th Century literature without Tennessee Williams or William Faulkner, or 20th Century music without Louis Armstrong, maybe you get a sense of what New Orleans has given to the country, just on cultural terms. I mean, can you imagine American cooking without New Orleans?

en When I told (the crew) we were going to New Orleans this year, as soon as the words were out of my mouth everybody started telling me, 'Oh, you have to eat here, the food is fabulous,' or 'Eat at this place, it's great,' ... And the thing they all said was the food is fabulous.
