You can't picture something natural doing something like that. It's devastating. People in Louisiana haven't seen anything like this in a long, long time. This was one of the most powerful hurricanes Louisiana has ever had to take on.

We can all unite behind that and be proud of that.

Given the abysmal failure of state and local officials in Louisiana to plan adequately for or respond to the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans, and given the long history of public corruption in Louisiana, ... I am not confident that Louisiana officials can be trusted to administer federal relief aid.

Category 4 and 5 storms are also making up a larger share of the total number of hurricanes. Category 4 and 5 hurricanes made up about 20% of all hurricanes in the 1970s, but over the last decade they accounted for about 35% of these storms.

The state of Louisiana is still suffering great economic loss due to the hurricanes. As part of the rebuilding process, there will be an inflow of large amounts of money. The governor, the legislature and state leadership at all levels have made a commitment that these funds will be audited to ensure that they are used properly.
